3 Doors Down scored a surprise hit single when "Kryptonite," a song from a self - produced CD, started receiving heavy airplay on a local radio station. Brad Arnold (vocals), Matt Roberts and Chris Henderson (guitars), Todd Harrell (bass) and Rich Liles (drums), hailing from Escatawpa, MS, cultivated a dedicated, growing fan base in the South and then traveled to New York to play a showcase at the renowned New York club, CBGBs. There, they came to the attention of Universal Music subsidiary Republic Records, who signed them and released their debut album, The Better Life, in 2000, which was produced by Paul Ebersold (Sister Hazel) and mixed by Toby Wright (Alice in Chains, Korn).
On the band’s sound, Harrell said : "It's a rock 'n' roll band, straight up. It's not really alternative or metal or anything -- it's rock 'n' roll." Fans were clearly ready for exactly that as The Better Life went on to sell more than 6 million copies. It spawned two more hit singles, “Loser” and “Duck and Run.”
For their sophomore effort, entitled Away from the Sun, the band enlisted a new drummer, Daniel Adair, and previewed some of their new songs for the Navy in the fall of 2002 when they entertained the U.S. troops stationed in Italy.
Arnold describes the lead single, “When I’m Gone,” saying: "It's basically saying, love me when I'm here or love me when I'm gone. Either way, be there.” Roberts had this to say about Away from the Sun: "Our sound is different. The music has grown. In one word, it's better." Brad agrees: Our sound's a little heavier and a little edgier, but it's definitely more passionate." |
