| In his replacement
MANILA, Philippines -- Some critics believe that the departure of vocalist Ney Dimaculangan from 6Cyclemind is a major blow to its survival. Ney himself, however, sees it otherwise, claiming that his replacement, Tutti Caringal, is worthy of filling up the vacuum resulting from his move to go solo.
The voice behind some of last decade's most popular OPM band songs has gone by his lonesome, releasing a solo album named after his first name. Though he remains under Soupstar Entertainment which manages his former band, he shifted labels, having joined the artist stable of Star Records.
In an interview with Bulletin Entertainment during his album launch at Rockville Bar in Timog, QC, he insisted, "I guess in the long run, identity and boses ni Tutti as frontman for 6Cyclemind. Time will tell."
Some quarters frown at 6Cyclemind's decision to continue with a different voice. Quite a number of press people arguably do not see Tutti as vocally good enough in handling the job, considering Ney's sound is too distinctive it has practically put a valuable stamp on the band's success.
Having been initially exposed as singer for another alternative rock band Protein Shake, Tutti was actually promoted from drummer to lead vocalist. Prior to this, he gained extra fame as co-host of Yeng Constantino for "Music Uplate" aired on ABS-CBN at late nights.
On whether he's trying to divert from his former group's music, Ney reasoned, "There's no conscious effort in doing that and I can't change my voice. I'm just happy that I got more freedom doing music. Before iisipin mo pa what the others will think. Ngayon kung ano ang lumabas, 'yun na."
"Ney" the album has 10 tracks which he himself composed and arranged, led by carrier single "Ligaw" which according to him is based from personal experience. It does contain two bonus tracks: The "RPG Metanoia" theme "Kaya Mo" which he sang with Tutti and Kean Cipriano, and "Walang Hanggan," his duet with Yeng. The former won the Favorite Media Sound Track category in the recent MYX Music Awards while the latter is theme song to ABS-CBN's hit teleserye "Imortal."
Credited as Ney Dmac on his debut's album cover, the artist who started singing at 14 is proud to have as guest vocalist noted rock chic Cookie Chua who performed on the track "October." Other interesting songs are "Sana," "Shut-Up," "Tagapagligtas," and the nationalistic "Himig Mo."
