I have my own view of this song. I think he is speaking to someone who has wronged him in the past and now has all his past sins catching up with him. Not nessecarily because of any actions taken by maynerd, but because of others who have been wronged in the same way. I'd say it was a former authority figure, who took advantage of his authority and trust to hurt those who looked up to him in a very personal and lasting way. |

This is hands down my favorite song off the album. You can really hear Tool's influence in the song and the beat is haunting....that piano is something else. The song is really deep and has several interpretations. |

I think that this song is about hypocrisy.
Anyways, I feel that this is the best song from APC. I never get bored to this.. Awsome. There aren't enough words to describe how amazing this song is. |

| i took it this way - my g/f friend from school just was killed in a car accident last week, the 4th person in the last year. it seems to mean to me that it tellin the person that he is glad to see how well they overcame this quite tradgic event, and not tear your life apart because of it. so i sang it to her and she felt so much better about herself after i did... |

Something about Maynard James Keenan is absolutely enthralling. The man has such an authentic original sounding voice... it just cuts straight through to the heart no matter what he's singing. I really love this song because he has no effects on his voice in the beginning. It's just Maynard. I love the way the drums are muffled with that droning steel drum sound incessantly pulsing through the first verse. Just an outstanding song in every light! |

Want my opinion on what the song's about?
Kay.
When someone gets "saved" or "reborn," depending on their particular Christian denomination, they speak of the things that they did before their spiritual cleansing as if they were someone else. Which, in a sense, I s'pose, in their eyes, they were.
"Recall the deeds as if they're all someone else's atrocious stories .
Now you stand reborn before us all.
So glad to see you well."
Make sense?
Good.
And now for the rest of it:
Do you think it's right that someone can commit a "sin" or "crime" and then be completely forgiven for it over a simple lifestyle change? I don't. And, I think, Maynard doesn't think so either.
"And not to pull your halo down around your neck and tug you to the ground.
But I'm more than just a little curious how you're planning to go about making your amends to the dead."
Had a person committed murder, been imprisoned and looked down upon for it, and then used "salvation" as an excuse to be forgiven and accepted back into society upon their dismissal from imprisonment, their guilt would eat them up inside, their "halo" would choke them, and there'd be no justification or "amends" to be made to the dead.
Maynard, as introspective as he is, sees through the bullshit in society, as well, and can comment on it thoughtfully.
Which is exactly what he did with this song.
Salvation is the noose, and guilt is the cloud that crumbled and hanged the guilty.

I agree with you Chayla. That's how I understand it too.
And yeah, this song is outstanding, one of the best ever written (in the humble opinion of a huge +LIVE+ fan ) |

Sorry, but I have to agree with emotionalrock with the meaning. That's exactly what I think Maynard's trying to say.
Anyways, I really love this song. Its calming, but it's angry at the same time. Depending on my mood, I can put it on and still relate to it. It's the best song on The Thirteenth Step (besides Pet!). Awesomeness!
I love you Maynard! |

i too have a differant take on this:
i think he is talking about a friend that has made i change in opinions on what is right and wrong.
maybe this friend has found religion???
in any case this person has now changed his/her ways and no longer does things that he/she has decided is wrong...
but in making these decisions she/she has alienated old friends and therefore wronged them
hence the whole "making amends with the "
those people are now to this person and the singer is asking how if you in doing the right thing hurt others.
i dunno...
maybe im off my rocker who knows? |

wow totaly love this song much like all APC songs get better the more you listen. in my opinion the song seems to be about someone whos done alot of damage/ hurt a lot of people in the past and now is showing they have changed and hes saying i dont mean to burst your bubble but how are you planning on convincing the people you hurt youve changed. But hey seeing as how APC songs are intentionaly made with the idea of the people making up their own reasons behind the song i guess we are all right |

I've really never tried to interprete this song. All I know is I love the sound and the lyrics. It's just beautiful. I sing a cover of it with my band and I love how there's like three levels to it. At the beginning it's really slow and light. Then it gets more of a beat going and speeds up a tad, and then the end just goes all out. |
