All Time Low's "Nothing Personal"

I wish All Time Low's "Nothing Personal" was a horrible record. Then, finally, I would be able to show off my snooty-journalist wit with some clever line thrashing the record and then ending my review with: "Nothing Personal" All Time Low, but I think your record blows yadda yadda yadda.

After a couple spins, however, it was pretty clear that my humor would have to be saved for another aptly titled record, because ATL have done nothing to disappoint. If you know All Time Low, you know this game. Catchy-as-hell pop-punk with hooks that are already stuck in your head by songs end, lyrics that range from girl related to touring and partying, (and sometimes both at the same time,) and frankly not much else in between, musicianship that isn't technical by any stretch of the imagination, but fits the music in aces and overall a fun listen and perfect summer music.

All Time Low isn't reinventing the wheel on "Nothing Personal," but if there was a category for 'Perfecting the Wheel' ATL is the front-runner, winner, champion and no one is anywhere near them.

Building on 2007s critically acclaimed "So Wrong, It's Right," ATL have upped their game in nearly all ways, especially with songwriting reaching new highs. I swear after a couple listens even Helen Keller would be singing along to the phenomenal "Nothing Personal" opener "Weightless" with its carefully placed "Oh oh oh's" and soaring chorus.

"Break Your Little Heart" and single "Damned If I Do Ya (Damned If I Don't)" continue to ride the wave of pop-punk heaven, with slow building verses that explode in to sugary sweet sing-a-long choruses a plenty.

Other stand out tracks include "Walls," which starts out with an electronic intro and then promptly kicks in the guitars and drums at full speed and ends up being one of the albums stronger tracks.

The more straightforward pop-punk "Keep The Change, You Filthy Animal," is another winner and has ATL channeling their inner New Found Glory with a sweet lead guitar lick and a fast pace held by singer Alex Gaskarth's vocals. "A Party Song (The Walk of Shame)" is another standout.

For all of its catchy fun, "Nothing Personal" does leave with me a few gripes. First and foremost, the record feels overproduced at some points. A bit of the grittyness of ATL's previous efforts has been lost on this record, and has the band focusing on the POP in pop-punk a bit too much at some points for my liking. I suspect this probably had to do with the amount of heavyweight producers (Butch Walker, Matt Squire, The-Dream) looking over the Maryland based band's shoulders.

Another small annoyance is the lack of a follow up to the excellent acoustic track "Remembering Sunday." "Nothing Personal" closer "Therapy" tries to duplicate the somber tone, but it doesn't quite get there.

Despite these flaws and a few odd moments during the middle of the disc, (see the skippable tracks, cheese-fest "Hello Brooklyn" and just plain weird The-Dream produced "Too Much,") overall "Nothing Personal" is an enjoyable, infectiously-catchy, perfect-for-blasting-in-your-car during the summer record. ATL have pop-punk down to a tee and if you ever question that fact giving "Nothing Personal" a few spins will clear up any doubt.

All Time Low is a band that is set to blow up and "Nothing Personal" is the perfect summer record catalyst to do it: Nothing Personal - See it just doesn't work when I dig the record.
