Now should you expect to see something that you hadn't seen
In somebody you'd known since you were sixteen; if love is a bolt from the blue, then what is that bolt but a glorified screw? and that doesn't hold nothing together Far from these nonsense bars and their nowhere music it's making me sick And I know it's making you sick There's nothing there, it's like eating air It's like drinking gin with nothing else in And that doesn't hold me together. But for one crowded hour, you were the only one in the room And I sailed around all those bumps in the night to your beacon in the gloom I thought I had found my golden September in the middle of that purple June But one crowded hour would lead to my wreck and ruin And I know you like your boys to take their medicine From the bowl with a silver spoon Who run away with the dish and scale the fish by the silvery light of the moon Who were taught from the womb to believe till the tomb That as far as their bleeding eyes see Is a pleasure pen, meant for them, builded and rent for them Not for the likes of me Not for the like of you and me And for one crowded hour, you were the only one in the room And I sailed around all those bumps in the night to your beacon in the gloom I thought I had found my golden September in the middle of that purple June But one crowded hour would lead to my wreck and ruin Oh but the green-eyed harpy of the salt land She takes into hers my hand She says, "Boy I know you're lying Oh but then, so am I," And to this I said "Oh well." Well put me in a cage full of lions, I learned to speak lion In fact I know the language well I picked it up while I was versing myself in the languages they speak in hell That night, the silence gave birth to a baby They took it away to her silent dismay And they raised it to be a lady Now she can't keep her mouth shut And for one crowded hour, you were the only one in the room And I sailed around all those bumps in the night to your beacon in the gloom I thought I had found my golden September in the middle of that purple June But one crowded hour would lead to my wreck and ruin For one crowded hour, you were the only one in the room Well I played a few songs for those bumps in the night In fact I played this very tune You said, "What is this six-stringed instrument but an adolescent loom?" And one crowded hour would lead to my wreck and ruin. |

1 posts | rhythm melody instruments lyrics vocal He has known her for 16 years, and he has suddenly seen her in a new light. He is infatuated and he can't understand so he tries to rationalise it by likening it to a glorified screw, pointing out how much of a lie "love" is and how he wants something more. The place they are in, is very 2D and superficial, its choking him, he doesn't fit in and he thinks she doesn't either. He wants something substantial with meaning rather than empty words and empty bottles of alcohol. The chorus highlights how for that one hour he was infatuated, how he saw her anew, and thought she was the answer to alot of things. But oh how wrong he was! She likes her boys to be a little damaged, and a little posh, from a privileged background, boys who always come off as selfish and a little arrogant. Boys who were taught from a young age that the world was their oyster, everything was meant for their enjoyment and they should sieze it all, because it was all theirs. She wasnt part of this world, nor was our lead man. (I cant help but think she desperately wanted to be part of it, hence why she got involved with them all) Green eyed harpy verse: I reckon she is the green eyed harpy and she confronts him, she says we're both lying to fit in, we're just as bad as eachother and he eloquently says "oh well" He expands on the "oh well" in the next verse. Saying if you put him amongst all those types of people, he too can blend in or "speak lion", but he likens the language "lion" to the languages spoken in hell, which mirrors the emotions beforehand about the place being seedy and superficial. In essence the enviorment he is in IS hell. And all these snobbish people are hell dwellers who speak the hell language "lion".. he makes it sound nicer than I do obviously. Now this is my favourite bit: "That night, the silence gave birth to a baby They took it away to her silent dismay And they raised it to be a lady Now she can't keep her mouth shut" The silence is their not speaking "Lion" anymore. They arent pretending in order to fit in they dont need to. They have found eachother and they are themselves with eachother. And from this REAL relationship, she got pregnant. But obviously it was a scandal and it was taken from her by "them", maybe her parents? maybe snobbish people who adopted? who knows. But the kid was raised into that 2D world, and the kid will never know the silence of her parents, because all she does is speak lion and mix in with the same superficial crowd. I'm not sure about "What is this six-stringed instrument but an adolescent loom?" - it might highlight how posh she herself is, or it might have some hidden depth that I cant grasp. Anyway, thats my analysis. Hope it helps. |

1 posts | rhythm melody instruments lyrics vocal Ok, this is what I interpreted from the song. It is about a working class boy who falls in love with a 'upper' class girl, pretty simple. The first verse talks about how the couple meet up sixteen years after a certain intimate moment, "Now should you expect to see something that you hadn't seen In somebody you'd known since you were sixteen." I believe they are waiting to meet their child that they haven't seen for sixteen years. The chorus then tells of how the couple met, the narrator, the boy, tells of how he was compelled towards this girl and how he felt she could solve all his problems. One thing led to another and they had sex. The next verse establishes that she is from a wealthier background than he is. "And I know you like your boys to take their medicine From the bowl with a silver spoon." The Green Eyed Harpy (this i am not to sure about) is the wealthy girls mum, saying that she knows about the boys background and believes that they should give the baby up for adoption. The next verse is the narrator saying how he went along with the adoption plans, even though he didn't agree with it. He went with the majority option, "Well put me in a cage full of lions, I learned to speak lion In fact I know the language well." The baby grew into a lady and is now looking for its parents, "And they raised it to be a lady Now she can't keep her mouth shut," and this is what lead to the narrators', "wreck and ruin." I think, I could just be talking rubbish. You decide. |

1 posts | Augie March have 2 other albums. I think their best album is "Sunset Studies" from about 10 years ago. it's achingly beautiful, particularly the song "There's no such place". I urge you to get it. |
