The in-joke is that Barenaked Ladies have been making kids’ records for years. Point taken. But now that the Toronto group has made it official with Snack Time, a collection of 24 original children’s songs, the ribbing carries less weight.
With Snack Time it is step-up time for the Ladies. The group pulls it off. The songs zip with references to Queen and Kriss Kross, and flirt with bluegrass and pop, even left-field art rock. It’s a total shambles, but works within the kiddie pop confines. No more, no less. Mike Devlin, Canwest News Service .
