Bayside – Shudder Review

Bayside just keeps proving over and over again that good songwriting and catchy hooks will go a long way in the music business. One of these days, the rest of the world will take notice as well. The Queens, New York band's fourth full-length album is every bit as good as anything they have ever released.

From the very start, the band puts its audience on notice: if you want to go along for the ride, get in now. The opening tune , "Boy", is a catchy song with a great hook. But it's not your average everyday pop song that could be heard in the background of a Freddie Prinze Jr. movie. This is a catchy pop-punk tune with the attitude to make the boys in Alkaline Trio smile. "What if for one minute he's given a chance and he does something brilliant?" lead singer Anthony Raneri wails. "But he'd rather not know cause walls protect him - his bedroom's a prison."

Throughout the album the band plays off lead guitarist Jack O'Shea's steady riffs. Song after song, O'Shea delivers while Raneri lends his support with the rhythm guitar. But unlike a lot of guitar-based bands, the rhythm section in Bayside really drives the band. The hard-pounding drumming of Chris Guglielmo, who took over after the tragic death of John "Beatz" Holohan in 2005, accents the ever-so evident bass lines which are laid down by bass player Nick Ghanbarian, who was severely injured in the crash that claimed Holohan.

The power the band shows is best displayed in the track "Roshambo (Rock paper Scissors)". It's catchy, fast-driven pop-punk ditty that tunes down the guitars a step and allows each and every member of the band to break free at some point. It's also one of those tracks that just makes you want to get up and bounce – off the walls, off other people or off whatever is in your area and is bounce-worthy.

O'Shea really shows his chops on "Call To Arms" and gives a subtle but very powerful guitar solo. On the song, Raneri howls: "A new experienced me we'll be coming back on rusted limbs and bloody knees; A call to arms from all the suburban soldiers who got no one to count on; Faceless and scarred we don't know where were going we forgot where we came from."

On the song, "I Can't Go On," the band hints slightly of Jimmy Eat World, which, in this case, is not a bad thing at all. The band writes one of its best songs and delivers it with the passion and power that made Jimmy Eat World so successful in the pop and punk realm.

The band hits its high note on the tack, "Have Fun Storming the Castle." O'Shea delivers a solo that sounds like something Iron Maiden would have written if Maiden ever wrote a college rock track. But it's the lyrics that make this track: "So I'm cynical I guess, but what's left worth believing in?" Raineri howls. "Wicked are the ones who dare to think outside the box; I guess its righteous making money in the name of god. Think about what's right and wrong; the same gray line we all live on. Oh, Sing out all the pain."

If there is a low point on the album, it's "I Think I'll Be OK", which sounds like a formulaic pop song that might have been written by one of the Blink-182 knockoffs that are trying still to fill the void left by that band's breakup. In and of itself, the song is not bad, but heard late on the album, it really doesn't fit with the rest of the tracks.

Bayside has obviously come a long way since forming in 2000 and releasing its first full-length album almost four full years later. Eventually the public will catch on to the fact that this talented foursome has written some of the catchiest songs in the pop-punk market. With the paucity of good bands on the radio today, it is a mystery why this band has not yet hit it really big.
