When Bayside sings of devastation and betrayal in songs like "How To Fix Everything" and "Guardrail" the emphasis is always placed equally on all parties involved. Honest self-examination, no matter how painful, brings a hope of redemption to these intimate, dark narratives of brooding and despair. "I'm ready to take that big step, start tearing off the layers I put up, or is it too late to be anything but what I am" from "How To Fix Everything" is a telling lyric, as it illustrates the loathing of a broken, insular heart suddenly turning inward, and finding that the blame lies inside. "Masterpiece" begs a friend to "Just accept yourself...find something that brings you closer to complete." Though their experiences in life have tested them, Bayside has found a way to complete themselves through the writing of meaningful lyrics and beautiful melodies, accompanied by touring and the love of music.
Bayside formed in Long Island, NY during the winter of 2000, after the requisite line-up changes of a young band were settled, they moved rapidly, establishing a fan base on the East Coast and touring North America. While still a very young band, Bayside began to catch the attention of various tastemakers, appearing on "From Brooklyn With Love," a compilation benefiting the victims of September 11th along with Taking Back Sunday, Brand New and The Reunion Show. Bayside recorded for the Dying Wish label in 2003 - the word was spreading, as the EP sold over 4,000 copies with no formal distribution and the band received in excess of 30,000 hits at mp3.com. Soon they were invited to contribute a song to "Bad Scene, Everybody's Fault," a Jawbreaker Tribute that featured Face To Face, Sparta and Fall Out Boy among others.
The exposure and great press from magazines like Alternative Press and Skratch brought Bayside to the attention of Victory Records, who signed the band in the fall of 2003 and encouraged them to record as soon as possible. J. Robbins was chosen to produce; the combination of his work in seminal, proto-emo band Jawbox and his production track record with bands like Hey Mercedes, The Promise Ring and Jets to Brazil was too much for the band to resist. "J. understood our vision, and with his experience on both sides of the board, he helped us expand on it. Music is very meaningful to us, he helped us perform on the edge emotionally, without losing our accessibility and pop sensibilities," said Anthony.
Anthony handles the musical chores, writing the melodies on acoustic guitar and arranging new songs on his four track for the band to hear. Jack adds his signature guitar solos and leads to fill out the songs after Anthony completes their structure, while John's driving rhythmic foundation provides the backdrop for Bayside's dynamic arrangements. The unique phrasing on "Sirens and Condolences" is Anthony's work; he adapts the lyrics syllabically to his melodies. "The most important thing in a song is melody, specifically vocal melodies. I try to make the words fit what I already have in my head. I want to create phrasing that is a little different from the norm, but still showcases the melody."
With the record complete, Bayside return to what they know best: touring. They've performed across the country, sharing the stage with bands ranging from Alkaline Trio, The Used, Further Seems Forever and Andrew WK.
Bayside developed their own style based on soaring vocals, powerful guitar work and brooding lyrics from influences as diverse as The Smiths, the Smoking Popes, and Nirvana, to the Cure, Stevie Wonder and Nick Drake. "Sirens and Condolences" picks up where Smoking Pope's "Destination Failure" and Jawbreaker's "Dear You" left off, a new entry in the field of melodic rock with a dangerous edge that is sure to attain the status of a classic.

Long Island-based Bayside formed in the winter of 2000 and quickly started developing a local following with their melodic brand of moody, guitar-driven emo. They soon hit the road, sharing stages across the United States with bands like the Alkaline Trio, Taking Back Sunday, and Further Seems Forever along the way. Their first release, the EP Long Stories Short, came out on local indie Dying Wish Records in August 2001. Touring continued and the following year Bayside found itself with a slot on Asbury, NJ's Skate and Surf Fest, Birmingham's Furnace Fest, and dates on two weeks of Warped Tour. As with many young bands, various lineup changes occurred throughout the years, and spring 2003 found original members Anthony Raneri (vocals/guitar) and Andrew Elderbaum (bass) being completed by Jim Mitchell (drums) and Jack O'Shea (guitar). That same summer, they released a split EP with Name Taken, before signing with Chicago powerhouse Victory Records. Sirens and Condolences, their brooding debut full-length produced by J. Robbins (Jawbox), was issued in January 2004. Along with a relentless show schedule, the guys utilized community-oriented Web sites like /Friendster and /Myspace to promote their music and build up a loyal underground following. Also during this time, bassist Nick Ghanbarian (ex-the Movielife, Silent Majority) and N.Y.C. veteran drummer John "Beatz" Holohan joined Bayside's ranks, replacing Elderbaum and Mitchell, respectively. Going into their next album, Bayside was feeling stronger and more cohesive than ever before, and wanted to depart from the group of producers that many of their peers had thus been using. Consequently, their August 2005 self-titled effort materialized with Shep Goodman and Ken Gioia at the controls; they had previously worked on albums by Mandy Moore and Lee Ann Womack. With their album done, an energized Bayside hit the road with Hawthorne Heights, Silverstein, and Aiden on the Never Sleep Again tour. But on the morning of October 31, their van hit a patch of ice and flipped over on the way to a show in Salt Lake City. Holohan was tragically killed in the accident and Ghanbarian severely injured. Grieving the loss, Bayside dropped off subsequent shows before Raneri and O'Shea decided to honor their friends by pressing on as a duo and performing acoustically. Taking place at Chicago's House of Blues, their set at the tour's last stop was recorded and released in February 2006. The live DVD and accompanying ten-song Acoustic EP included the new song "Winter," a tribute to Holohan. After a brief headlining tour, Bayside next spent the beginning of 2006 as the main support for the Smoking Popes' reunion tour. With Ghanbarian recovered and new drummer Chris Guglielmo on board, the band looked forward to their next album. Recording again with producers Goodman and Gioia, the aptly titled The Walking Wounded was issued in early February 2007; it found the guys not explicitly focusing on their earlier tragedy, but instead on survival and moving forward.
