Benjamin Biolay - Biography

Benjamin Biolay was born on January 20, 1973 in Villefranche-sur-Saône, France. He grew up in a musical universe (his father was an amateur clarinettist) & was interested. He played violin & tuba in a symphonic orchestra. Then, at 17, he changed & founded a pop music band.
In 1992, Benjamin made his first demos thanks to one of Liane Foly's lyricists, but they stayed in maquettes. After touring with many bands, Benjamin released his first single in 1996, "La Révolution" & another one the following year, "Le Jour Viendra", but none of them got successful. In 1998, he met Keren Ann & together they made her first album, La Biographie de Luka Philipsen, and Henri Salvador's album Chambre Avec Vue. In 2001, Benjamin released his first album Rose Kennedy & became one of the most talented songwriters. He also wrote his sister's Coralie Clément debut album. In May 2002, he married actress Chiara Mastroianni (daughter of Catherine Deneuve & Marcello Mastroianni) & in April 2003, their daughter Anna was born. In 2003, Benjamin wrote songs for Juliette Gréco & Valérie Lagrange, translated a jazz song in French for Julien Clerc & released his second album Négatif. After writing songs for Elsa, a soundtrack & the duet-album Home with his wife in 2004, he came back in 2005 with his autobiographical album À L'Origine, sometimes heavy, sometimes crude but still beautiful. In September 2007, Benjamin released Trash Yéyé, another beautiful album. In April 2009, he left Virgin & signed to Naive. |
