Song lyrics
(Bill Anderson/Jon Randall)
Brad Paisley & Alison Krauss

(Brad)
She put him out like the burnin' end of a midnight cigarette
She broke his heart, he spent his whole life tryin' to forget
We watched him drink his pain away a little at a time
But he never could get drunk enough to get her off his mind,
Until the night.

Chorus: (Both)
He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away her memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength he had to get up off his knees
We found him with his face down in the pillow
With a note that said I'll love her 'til I die
And when we buried him beneath the willow
The angels sang a whiskey lullaby.

La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la.

La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la.

(Alison)
The rumors flew but nobody knew how much she blamed herself
For years and years she tried to hide the whiskey on her breath
She finally drank her pain away a little at a time
But she never could get drunk enough to get him off her mind,
Until the night.

Chorus: (Both)
She put that bottle to her head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away his memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength she had to get up off her knees
We found her with her face down in the pillow
Clinging to his picture for dear life
We laid her next to him beneath the willow
While the angels sang a whiskey lullaby.

La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la.

--- Instrumental ---

La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la.

--- Instrumental ---

La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la.

La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la...

I loved this song even when I first heard it - and still love it! The melody, the smooth mode, the voices, the lyrics, everything is in a great harmony...

And to McKlusky, I also read "Where the Red Fern Grows", i agree, that was a nice and miserable story, just as this song!

this is the best sad song i have ever heard before on country music. last night while i was trying to go to sleep, i heard this song and i was just blown away! it was amazing! the first time i heard it, i fell in love with it! it made me think a lot about it. this song expresses how much they love each other and also at the same time how sad. this is really a song to remember! i give it an A++++!!!!

i aggree chrissy47 i cry when i hear it i have bad flash backs of my sister in the hospital with a neck brace on i cant imagine that the carelessness of 1 person leads up to death pain and missery of every one else.ever since the accident my sister has been lost. not like a bad lost but she is lucky to have good friends that made her change her mind about suicide. my sister was lucky. but all she thought about for weeks was ryan a friend of hers that died in the accident i had people at school making up stories that they knew people in the accident i wanted to hurt them so badly i cried they have no right lieing like that around me. i wish i could forget about it and move on and so does my very lucky sister!!

i love country music i love brad paisly but what some of you said about suicide made me feel bad i can sort of relate to it on june 2005 {friday the 13} my sister almost died in a car accident she broke her back and 1 of her friends died i heard the song before and i started chanting it in my head.then i nodest that because her boy friend {the driver} who was showing off and driving with his knees the next time i saw him i wanted to say very bad things about him then i realised that the carlessnessof one person could lead up to another persons death and it could even hurt the lives of a lot of people!

dear FOXRACEBABE-
Thank you for your comments on Whiskey Lullaby

--Suicide is Very stupid...If only the people who do it, could see how much hurt they put into a family. It really sucks...--

I know it may be hard to believe... but that really made me think about my committing suicide. I didnt really think about how bad it would hurt my friends. I'm only 13 and im already smoking weed and drinking. I fell in love with a guy after know him for a week (we did everything including having sex) and now i miss him so much. hes one of my brothers friends but he's not allowed to come over. i'm scared i'll never see him again. At one point i was so sad i thought about commiting suicide for a few days. I dont think i will now though because i dont want to hurt my friends and family so much.
thank you again,
erin

*im sooo sorry about ur brother committing suicide*

I only read the first page of posts on this song, but already it seems that there are alot of people who like this song. Personally I like, for two reasons..........
1) it is about a love that never got to be...i find that interesting....and it involved suicide in a way that most don't understand.......someone loved someone else soooo much that they couldn't live without that person

2) the music/lyrics/voices of this song were truley amazing......I agree that haunting is a good way to describe the sounds and effects.

I wish that no one had to understand suicide, I wish that no ones love had to be that hard, and I wish that people who loved eachother would always be together.

Oh, btw, to those who think suicide is a selfish act......it is not selfish to the person wanting to commit suicide. To the person who wants death, they think that their death will aleiviate the suffering of other.........there entire intent is NOT to ONLY releive their own suffering, at the point of suicide, the person is thinking more about the good their death will do for others!
getting off soap box now.......

all in all, great song!

i think this is one of the best and saddest songs i've ever heard. i love the video, i think it's so sad but it has a nice ending, with the couple dancing under the tree after she was buried, and the little girl watching. i think of it like they both died because they loved each other, and when it didn't work for them while they were living, they could still be together forever after they died. i loved the song even more after watching the video. after the first time i heard the song i wanted to cry, and songs don't often do that to me, only the best ones can. i hadn't paid much attention to brad paisley or allison krauss before this song, and i was amazed by their voices and when i found out it was them and i had to go right out and buy his cd.

I keep seeing people saying stuff about Suicide here...SDuicide isn't the theme of this Song...Depression & Alcololism to the Point of Alcohol-Poisoning are the Theme...& I keep reading stuff about the Glorification of Suicide. This confuses me. As someone who has, on numerous Occasions, Attempted Suicide, I must say that there is no Song I have EVER Heard which Glorifies the Act. Everything I've heard on that Subject seems to me to be an attempt to find the Rason for the act of taking One's Own Life, or a Translation of the Contemplation of performing said Act into Song-Form. Frankly it Conserns me that anyone would a)Associate ths song with Suicide when it's about something Else entirely, & b) Suggest that it Intentionally Encourages Suicidal Tendencies.

Someone, please kindly Explain to me where all this is Coming from...I'd like to understand where you Folks wh have these Concepts are coming from...Just for the Sake of being on the Same Page...

Gator McKlusky: I loved you post. It told how much thought you put into this song. My best friend was going to commit suicide, but we (her friends and family) helped her pull through it. This song is amazing and touching and the music video is awesome. You can watch it at www.launch.com. I am a very big fan of Brad Paisley. This and Mud on the tires are great country songs.
