Song lyrics
(Bill Anderson/Jon Randall)
Brad Paisley & Alison Krauss

(Brad)
She put him out like the burnin' end of a midnight cigarette
She broke his heart, he spent his whole life tryin' to forget
We watched him drink his pain away a little at a time
But he never could get drunk enough to get her off his mind,
Until the night.

Chorus: (Both)
He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away her memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength he had to get up off his knees
We found him with his face down in the pillow
With a note that said I'll love her 'til I die
And when we buried him beneath the willow
The angels sang a whiskey lullaby.

La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la.

La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la.

(Alison)
The rumors flew but nobody knew how much she blamed herself
For years and years she tried to hide the whiskey on her breath
She finally drank her pain away a little at a time
But she never could get drunk enough to get him off her mind,
Until the night.

Chorus: (Both)
She put that bottle to her head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away his memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength she had to get up off her knees
We found her with her face down in the pillow
Clinging to his picture for dear life
We laid her next to him beneath the willow
While the angels sang a whiskey lullaby.

La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la.

--- Instrumental ---

La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la.

--- Instrumental ---

La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la.

La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la...

I would like to start by saying that this is a beautiful song. I am a lover of "many" types of music, some of my favorite being harmony peices. Brad and Allison's voices come together in such euphony and balance that I often have been moved to turn off the radio when the song is over because there is not another one out there that could top it. This itself is such an ironic contrast to the lyrics that it makes the song that much more intresting. After hearing the song, I thought about the lyrics. I was reminded of a very sad but sweet story that I read in grade school, "Where the Red Fern Grows". A tragic but yet somehow soothing tale of two dogs buried beneath a willow tree. One of the dogs was killed by a mountain lion and buried beneath a willow tree. The other dog became lethargic and lost the will to live. The boy who raised the two pups later found him dead on top of the other dog's grave. He buried the dog next to the other, underneath the willow. Later he returns to find a red fern growing between the two graves. Maybe this song has more meaning than we realize?? Any replies would be cool!! Later

Yes I do know what you mean like the line(S)

HE(She) Put the bottle to her head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away his memory,
Life is short but this time it was bigger,
Then the streght He(She) had get up off her knees.

The Chours would have to be my favorite part.

This a beaitiful song which i think everybody should listen to at least once. I have had several of my friends listen to this song and all of them cried including me. It really surprised me that Brad Paisley would write such a sad and hauntng song. Allison and Brad really did a good job bringing this song and meaning together into a touching and emotional song that will live in your heart forever!

This song is so wonderful. Committing suicide is a selfish act, and these two people took their own lives for love. I've been in love once in my life (reminding u that I'm young) and recently my grandmother passed away so every time I hear this song, it puts this weird ache in my heart, because loving someone that much and then loosing them is a terrible thing.

My best friend pointed this song out to me on the radio during a really fun night. I stopped and was so suprised that I almost came to tears, I never cry. That was so sad to think that something you held in could affect your life and someone elses in such a way.

Personally, I'm not much of a country fan, but when I heard this song, I instantly fell in love with it. It's so realistic, and just the mood it sets makes you want to cry. Honestly this is one of the saddest songs i've ever heard, but also one of the best i've heard yet

haunting is indeed a word to describe it, captivating works well too.

I think a local radio dj said it best when he commmented: "I think I'm gonna need a 12 pack of prozac to get over that one."

honestly this is probally one of the sadest songs i have ever heard in my life. I think brad really hit the right note here. This song made me cry and i never cry. I know some people who have almost killed themselves over stupid things. This song really hits a homerun and i fell in love with it the first time i heard it. I dont think suicide is ever the way out and he kinda showed that for every action theres a consequence.

Suicide is Very stupid...If only the people who do it, could see how much hurt they put into a family. It really sucks...

I think it is a really good song when it comes to love...But it is about lost love....No one ones how people blame temselves for things that happen...and I am one that knows....the song shows that things arent as they seem...so dont let things get the best of you....hang in there and it'll all be great
