Song lyrics
I'd arrest you if I had handcuffs.
I'd arrest you if I had the time.
I'd throw you down in the back seat,
As if you'd committed a terrible crime.

I'd break into a towns worth of houses,
And rob whole families blind.
I'd do it to you like you do it to me,
If you knew you would get away fine.

I'd drown all these crying babies,
If I knew that their mothers wouldn't cry.
I'd hold them down and I'd squeeze real soft,
To let a piece of myself die.

It's hard to be the better man,
When you forget you're trying.
It's hard to be the better man.

I'd arrest you if I had handcuffs.
I'd arrest you if I had the time.
I'd wait for you outside the courtroom;
Taunting when all your appeals were declined.

I'd drive my car off of a bridge,
If I knew that you weren't inside.
With a pedal to the floor,
Couldn't ask for more.
A fantastic way to kill some time.

And you could lay on your back and be beaten.
You could put up your fists and fight.
You could try and be way up.
Way up. Way up. Way up.
Way up. Way up. Way up.
Way up.

It's hard be the better man,
When you forget you're trying.
It's hard to be the better man,
When you're still lying.
It's hard to be the better man,
When you forget you're trying.
It's hard to be the better man,
When you're still lying.
You're still lying.

I agree that some of the lyrics are disturbing but I love how Jesse's voice can still make them sound beautiful.

The "disturbing" parts of the song are only disturbing if you take them literally. Obviously in light of the quality of this song writer's writing, the lyrics are not literal. Cmon people. Hear me out.

Being apparently a spiritual person, we can apply such reasoning to the interpretation of these lyrics. The lines regarding 'drowning babies' to 'let a piece of him die' I see as a reference to losing INNOCENCE.

The other "disturbing" lines in the rest of the song no doubt follow a similiar thread of thought and feeling.

According to Christian spirituality/philosophy, we are carnal and subject to commit any sin, in fact, ALL SIN, save for one thing: The Grace of God in our life. On some more then others no doubt, but there nontheless.

It's also a song of how we have to constantly be aware of our struggle to cling to virtue to sometimes obtain it. "it's hard to be a better man, WHEN YOU FORGET YOUR TRYING...WHEN YOUR STILL LYING"

('LYING' like the person is gettin' beaten by the stress and the sins of the world as the WAAAAY UP lyrics before indicate about laying or laying and fighting... interesting how this parallels Christ's own trials before his crucifixion) Will you lay "turn the other cheek" and be the BETTER MAN, or will you FIGHT as be just like the rest?

That's what I hear in this song. It's beautiful, and not disturbing in the least.

I think cleverest ^ had some really good points and i'd be absolutelly sold out on them if jesse wrote the song just cause i know more about jesse's history w religion than i do vin's. but regardless you could have totally nailed it. I just saw it as talking about how society is the only thing that keeps him from not being a total wreck. but yeah obviously not literally talking about drowning babys. though it is kinda graphic and it took me awhile to choke that down but now its a pretty good song to me. pz

This song is literally about fighting off the demon inside of you.. The song is written from the perspective of the persons Conscious.. With one side being the good side and one side being the evil {Demon} side.. The lines " I'd arrest you if I had handcuffs, I'd arrest you if I had the time " is from the Narrators perspective talking about arresting (stopping) the demon inside of himself from doing bad. The crying babies line is talking about doing bad and the concequences for the bad behavior. Once again from the conscious's perspective dealing with the "angel on one shoulder, devil on the other shoulder" thing. Just think if you were babysitting a baby and the baby keeps crying

" I would drown all these crying babies" (The demon on one shoulder would tell you just to drown the baby rather than seeing what was wrong with the baby)

" If I knew that their mothers wouldnt cry" ( The concequence to the action of drowning the babies.} this line obviously talks about his morals and his conscious

Also the lines at the end " you can lay on your back and be beaten, or you can put up your fists and fight" talks about how you can just let the demon get the best of you or you can put up your fists and fight the demon away.

i don't think the lyrics are very disturbing, and i never really thought of the spiritual sense of the song, because i'm not a spiritual person, but I always interpreted the line "i'd drown all these crying babies, if i knew that their mothers wouldn't cry" as kind of saving the babies.
if a mother wouldn't cry if her baby dies, then what kind of mother is she?
if she isn't upset that her infant has drown, how concerned is she really for her child?
So, if the mothers would cry if their babies are put to death, he will kill them. Save them from their future neglect.
i always assumed this was the message, but the spiritual interpretation also makes a lot of sense.

in any case, i love this song, and the album.
best one yet, in my opinion.
