| Song lyrics |
The time has come for colds and overcoats.
We're quiet on the ride,
we're all just waiting to get home.
Another week away, my greatest fear.
I need the smell of summer,
I need its noises in my ears.
If looks could really kill,
then my profession would staring.
Please know we do this cause we care
and not for the thrill.
Collect calls to home
to tell them that I realize
that everyone who lives will someday die
and die alone.
And we won't let you in.
Though we're down and out.
We won't let you in.
You win.
I wrote more postcards than hooks.
I read more maps than books.
Feel like every chance to leave
is another chance I should have took.
Every minute is a mile.
I've never felt so hollow.
I'm an old abandoned church with broken pews
and empty aisles.
My secrets for a buck.
Watch me as I cut myself wide open
on this stage. Yes, I am paid
to spill my guts. I won't see home till spring. Oh, I would kill for the Atlantic,
but I am paid to make girls panic
while I sing.
And we won't let you in.
Though we're down and out.
We won't let you in.
And we won't let you in.
We don't want what isn't ours.
We won't let you in.
You win.
And the coastline is quiet.
While we're quietly losing control.
Yes, we're silent but sure
we inventened the cure
that will wash out my memories of her.
"The harpoon is loaded. The cage is lowered.
The water is red."
Like you.

| Jesse said in his diary on the website, "Being in a band means missing out on all the things you didn't wanna miss out on by having a normal job which is why you joined a band in the first place." That may not be exact but it's the point that matters. I think that sums up this song...he kinda wishes he could live a normal life and that some of the annoying, fad-driven fans like most of the girls would go away. The ending is also amazing even though I have no idea what it means.

| The lyrics and message (from what I've gathered off it) put me off this song a little bit.
The band are in a lucky position to be doing what they want and doing it successfully, and I guess it just pisses me off that this song affected the way I viewed the rest off them.
The song is really striking none-the-less | 09-05-2004 16:50 xcutxme0pen | 24 posts
| i think that this song is great. the way that i interpret the end is that being on tour and writing songs is a way to forget the girl that he is writing about in the first place, and that he is "drowning" memories of her. im not quite sure if im right though | 09-05-2004 16:54 animal2 | 12,779 posts
| if looks could really kill, then my profession would staring.
that's my favorite line. i love this song so much. there are several different ways to interpret it, but i think that it means that it's about them being on tour and not being able to be home and everything... hence stated in the line "please know we do this cause we care and not for the thrill". brand new is extremely talented... i am a HUGE brand new fan and i always will be... because their music has so much meaning, and their sound is unique. | 12-05-2004 18:20 Annabelle_K | 19 posts

I'm really confused! Does anyone else hear the words "would be"??? I really think there is a "be" in there so then is it - would be stare? cuz that makes sense too if you think about it... | 25-06-2004 03:21 subtleasabrick | 5 posts

Okay, to start off, everyones asking what the song is about so i'll try and explain.. well atleast how i see it. basically the whole song is about them and how their fame is taking over the position of their normal lives. basically theres prices to pay to what they've started.. but yea my favorite verse...
I wrote more postcards than hooks.
(writing postcards to family back home)
I read more maps than books.
(tour busses, reading maps to new locations)
Feel like every chance to leave
(he had chances to leave)
is another chance I should have took.
(wish he took them)
Every minute is a mile.
(every minute they're traveling more)
I've never felt so hollow.
(he needs something more)
I'm an old abandoned church with broken pews
and empty aisles.
(not sure about that)
My secrets for a buck.
(not sure this either)
Watch me as I cut myself wide open
on this stage.
Yes, I am paid to spill my guts.
(he's paid to tell his stories about his love, like put into songs and such)
I won't see home till spring.
(not going home till the tour is over)
Oh, I would kill for the Atlantic,
(guessing his home is in the atlantic)
but I am paid to make girls panic
while I sing.
(self explanatory)

I don't think this is the most pleasing song by Brand New to the ear, but its grown on me some, and understanding what the song is about makes me like it more. I'd have to say its not Brand New's best work though. | 12-09-2004 02:33 bRAndNewEv18 | 1,267 posts

And we won't let you in.
Though we're down and out.
We won't let you in.
You win.

| i think alot of this song (particullarly that part) is about how thay vow to neve become sell-outs...even tho some would say they did sell-out....im not one of those people tho | 28-12-2004 18:54 hug_a_tree | 1 posts

im most deffiantly getting the vibe that this song is about how being in a band isnt always easy and that people often take thier songs and such for granted and dont fully appreciate the lyrics or the time and effort put into each concert and cd and everything.
btw this is one of my favorite songs on deja intendu. most deffinatly. | 28-12-2004 22:41 Ceccy | 7 posts

There's this guy who used to live in my neighborhood who is Jesse's cousin and he says that that "we won't let you in" part is about a goalie in hockey...that sounds really weird...maybe it's like an analogie or comparison or something...
Also the "Secrets for a buck" part could be like about invasive journalism...like how now that he's a celebrity ppl know all of his secrets or something.
I think the "I'm an old abandoned Church" part could be like...you know how ppl say your body is a temple well the church could be his body and inside he's empty and broken.

i have a strong feeling it means he puts so much of himself into his songs and all his experiences and such and well you pay to hear it.
its kind of self explanatory i think. |
