| Song lyrics |
Who do you carry the torch for, my young man?
Do you believe in anything?
Do you carry it around just to burn things down?
Meet me tonight on the turnpike, my darling,
'Cause we believe in everything.
If we sweat all these debts then we're sure to drown,
So we'll strap ourselves up to this engine now,
With a god who we found laying under the backseat.
What did you learn tonight,
While shouting so loud, you barely joyous, broken thing?
You're a voice that never sings, is what I say.
You were freezing over hell.
You were bringing on the end you do so well.
You can only blame yourself, is what I say.
Oh, order your daughters to ignore me,
Think that will sort me?
And sweep me under the rug?
While you're beating with a book,
Everyone that book tells you to love.
There is an ember in the heart of the kiln,
And it's burning hot with love.
Burning out my center until there's nothing but dust.
Holding me with care into your cigarette,
'Cause the god I believe in worked on a campaign trail.
What did you learn tonight,
While shouting so loud, you barely joyous, broken thing?
You're a voice that never sings, is what I say.
You were freezing over hell.
You were bringing on the end you do so well.
You can only blame yourself, is what I say.
Who do you carry the torch for, my young man?
Do you believe in anything?
Do you carry it around just to burn things to the ground?
What did you learn tonight,
While shouting so loud, you barely joyous, broken thing?
You're a voice that never sings, is what I say.
You were freezing over hell.
You were bringing on the end you do so well.
You can only blame yourself, is what I say.
Feels like,
We could escape this.
I might,
Throw it away,
For fear of the silver sun.
If you try,
Running a maze,
Of your lies,
It's too hard to save.
You've thrown out every one.

This was my first favorite song off the album. I listened to it over 15 times before I began to get sick of it. I stopped listening for a few days, and now I love it again, almost as much as originally. Jesus Christ matches it as the ones I like most. It's catchy and original, at least in terms of the rest of the album. | 06-12-2006 05:19 degausser | 14 posts

This song is definetely about frustration with the hypocricy of some religions
You're shouting so loud you barely enjoy this broken thing. You're a voice that never sings, is what I say.
About how conflicts between religions overshadow the love that they're supposed to promote. Also shown in this line:
And beating with a book everyone, That book tells you to love.
Bible, Koran, Torah? The line about the torch is about how young nieve people jump to fight for something that they don't really even believe. they just believe it (carry the torch) to fight (burn things down). | 02-01-2007 04:30 tmill | 18 posts

my ipod says the name of this song is "The Archers' Bows Have Broken" | 31-01-2007 01:15 imanoutkast | 9 posts
| this is quality musicianship and lyric writing to be sure! does anyone know what Jesse believes as a worldview? i'm just curious, because it seems to me he does a lot of singing about biblical things, but never seems to reach a conclusion. one more thing-- anyone else think he sounds like dave matthews on this song? kind of kewl. kudos BN | 04-02-2007 01:38 snuffy | 26 posts

Well, that's half of the concepts on this album, "The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me"
It has to do with his personal demons and his struggle with believing in God.
He's just a genius in putting it into words.
I don't understand how someone can articulate themself as well as and in the way Jesse Lacey can.

| yea, thx snuffy, i understand the concept of the cd. but i was wanting to know if there was any set beliefs Jesse subscribes to...if you know what i mean. so far i haven't really been able to determine if he trusts in God or just believes that he exists. one clue in this song was, "the God i believe in worked on a campaign trail." to me that sounds like he does believe in God, and what Jesus did on this earth, but i can't be too sure... if that is what he meant, that's a kewl way to put it. you can tell he thinks a lot, which seems to be not so common anymore in music. | 23-04-2007 08:04 413spideyoutfit | 1,111 posts
| Not my favourite song off the cd but it's a great song indeed.
Yeah I was trying to find out if Jesse was a christian or not, but not a clue. He attented some sorta christian school but apart from that i couldn't find anything. It seems very likely that he's a christian...or not, well even if he is one, he's not like other 'faithful' christians, then instead of singing brandnew, he would be performing with Hillsong. Like what others mentioned above, Jesse constantly struggles with his religious belief and between his inner god and demon, and he examine them, express them and make them into music which is awesome. Even the music doesn't capture you the first time, surely his lyrics will. | 28-05-2007 04:07 Rachelove | 2 posts
| Jesse is a Christian
"I know you're coming for the people like me"
[The bible says Jesus is coming back to take his people to heaven]
but he is not firm with his walk with Christ.
He is turned off by the hypocrisy of religion
he is tempted by the devil to sin
he is unsure of when it is Jesus tempting him to do something or the Devil.
he seems to be longing for a relationship with Christ, rather than a religion.. he's trying to rise above. He's in a battle with the world.
"It's hard to be the better man,
When you forget you're trying.
It's hard to be the better man. "
he's trying to walk right with God/Jesus
but it's a hard walk.
Believe me, I know.
