Song lyrics
There's a middle-aged woman, she's dragging her feet
She carries baskets of clothes to a laundromat
While the Mexican children, kick rocks into the street
And they laugh in a language I don’t understand
But I love them, why do I love them?
So the neighborhood's dimming, I smoke on the porch
Watch the people as they pass enclosed inside their cars
On their faces just anger or disappointment
I start wishing there was something I could offer them
A consolation, what could I offer them?
Well, they are sad in their suburbs, robots water the lawn
and everything they touch gets dusted spotless
And so they start to believe they've not touched anything at all
And the cars in the driveway only multiply
Well, They are lost in their houses
I've heard them sing in the shower
Making speeches to their sister on the telephone
Saying, "You come home, woman, you come here
Don’t stay so far away from me"
This weather has me wanting love more tangible
Something I can hold
cause it’s getting cold
Let's hold up our fists to the flame in the sky
To block out the light that's reaching for our eyes
Cause it, cause it would blind us
Yeah it will blind us
Well, I've locked my actions in the grooves of routine
So I may never be free of this apathy
But I wait for a letter that's coming to me
She sends me pictures of the ocean in an envelope
So there still is hope, yes, I can be healed
There is someone looking for what I've concealed
In my secret drawer, in my pockets deep
You will find the reasons that I can’t sleep
And you will still want me
But will you still want me?
Will you still want me?
Well i said "Come for the week, you can sleep in my bed
And pass through my life like a dream through my head
It will be easy
I'll make it easy"
But, all I have for the moment is a song to pass the time
And a melody to keep me from worrying
Some simple progression to keep my fingers busy
And words that are sure to come back to me
And they'll be laughing
And they'll be laughing
My mediocrity, my mediocrity
Yeah they'll be laughing
Yeah they'll be laughing
They will be laughing

i love this song so much! as for it's point, i'm not sure really... it doesn't seem to have one point because he talks about so many different things during the song (mexican children, people in suburban houses, picture of the ocean etc.). i think its just kind of lots of random thoughts, not really connected... just a song to pass the time really. lol. sorry if i'm not being much help here

ok
this is not just a song to pass the time
it has deep meaning, pertaining to the routine of the American peoples
when you think about this song with a deeper meaning in it, you realize that the "mexican children" are laughing, with such a simple thing such as kicking rocks into the streets, "and i love them"
but then the american people, in their suburbs, having robots water their lawn, being kept away from their loved ones by routine that they themselves locked into, everyone sad, desolate, and never experiencing the joys of life
please read the lyrics of this song again, and realize what americans have done to themselves

Well I strongly disagree with those above and perhaps that is what the majority would think about the song. If you look into the writer of it (conor oberst) and you look into his state of mind (his depression and neurosia) then you can tell that it is not a political statement about the corruption in America at all from the point of view the above commentors see it as. You all see it as a statement from the outside criticizing the way people are, and the way people live in America. It's actually about how he sees it as he is within it, confined in this middle class american world where the only happiness comes from a fraud sense of emotion. And the line "they laugh in a language I don't understand" is not referring to other countries being happier than Americans, to me I think he means he can't understand how they can laugh, he didn't understand happiness at this point in his life. This album Fevers and Mirrors has no involvement whatsoever in the recollection of society, instead it's all about him and his depression, don't let what you see fool you when it comes to conor oberst cause nothing it was it ever seems with him. he's a genious and i respect him like no one else in the world. thank you.

well i sort of agree with both versions. but when he talks about "mexican children" i think he's just putting an example of a simple life full of simple happiness, whereas he's absorbed by a routine and by somber people just like him. he cant be happy coz he ignores what its like to BE happy. as someone already said, he cant conceive happiness at all.
god, i love him. i so relate to him and his beatiful lyrics. i think the title has to do with how he doesnt feel it anymore. idk maybe its just my way of interpretation (thats the beauty of his lyrics, you can adapt it and make it your own).. but i think that its a song to pass the time because its like he's doing it just coz he's an artist and a composer and thats what he does, but not really feeling it, he's sinking in this depression in which all he does is pass the time, going automatically from one activity to the other.
gosh, i've felt that way.
thumbs up for conor oberst.
