Song lyrics
So there was this woman and
she was on an airplane and
she's flying to meet her fiancé
sailing high above the largest ocean
on planet earth and she was seated
next to this man who you know
she had tried to start a conversation
but really the only thing
she heard him say was to order his bloody mary
and she's sitting there and she's reading
this really arduous magazine article about this
third world country that she couldn't
even pronounce the name of and
she's feeling very bored and very despondent
and then uh suddenly there's this huge mechanical failure and one of the engines gave out
and they started just falling thirty thousand feet
and the pilots on the microphone and he's saying,
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, Oh My God, I'm Sorry"
and apologizing and she looks at the man and she says,
"where are we going" and he looks at her and he says,
"We're going to a party, it's a birthday party.
It's your birthday party, happy birthday darling.
We love you very, very, very, very, very, very, very much."
and then he starts humming this little tune and it kind of goes like this:

One, Two, One, Two, Three, Four
We must talk in every telephone, get eaten off the web
We must rip out all the epilogues from the books we have read
And to the face of every criminal strapped firmly in a chair
We must stare, we must stare, we must stare

We must take all of the medicines too expensive now to sell
Set fire to the preacher who is promising us hell
And in the ear of every anarchist who sleeps but doesn't dream
We must sing, we must sing, we must sing

And it'll go like this
While my mother waters plants my father loads his gun.
He says, "Death will give us back to god,
just like the setting sun
is returned to the lonesome ocean."

And then they splashed into the deep blue sea
It was a wonderful splash

We must blend into the choir, sing as static with the whole
We must memorize nine numbers and deny we have a soul
And to this endless race for property and privilege to be won
We must run, we must run, we must run

We must hang up in the belfry where the bats in moonlight laugh
We must stare into a crystal ball and only see the past
And in the caverns of tomorrow with our flashlights and our love
We must plunge, we must plunge, we must plunge

And then we'll get down there,
way down to the very bottom of everything
and then we'll see it, we'll see it, we'll see it

Oh my morning's coming back
The whole worlds waking up
Oh the city bus is swimming past
I'm happy just because
I found out I am really no one

This song is one of those which makes you want to dance and laugh and cry and be sooo happy...
It's about death...dying...but it is so truly beautiful..finding out you are really no one..that nothing else matters, everything you did leading up to that very moment meant nothing...absolutly nothing, and that is something real and right and amazingly insightful to discover. This is a real masterpiece in my eyes.

Great song and great lyrics. Just wondering, does anyone get the 'memorise nine numbers and deny we have a soul' line?

my only guess would be he's referring to your social security number since it totally depersonalizes you and is 9 numbers to the best of my knowledge

"Bright Eyes" ..........................................

Why doesn't he just use his real name?

"Memorize nine numbers and deny we have a soul" How old is this guy again? 15? Jebus, just because one works at a shitty corporate-minimum-wage-job DOES NOT mean they "don't have a soul".

I know songs usually over-exagerate, but this guy passes the line. The beginning, by that I mean before the plane crash, is fine...I couldn't understand the rest.

Death is a party? What kind of attitude is that. We should pretend it isn't foreboding? Sometimes depressing? The End? Escapism at it's best. The beginning of this song was good, there were no melodramatic cries, or boring acoustics. Just silence and a guy telling a story.

Reminded me of that Velvet Underground song...THAT song makes sense. Well, it's actually just a short story set to a great bass beat...but that's beside the point - "At the Bottom of Everything" equates to stereo-typical "We're 'lefties'/We hate Bush/We hate the War" statements one after the other.

"War on War" = tastefully done. From the name of the song you know the stance, plus the first couple of lines are "It's a war on war". Instead beating us over the head with constant rhetoric, Tweedy just says what he thinks. In any case Wilco is interested in making music - that trumps "artistic" twenty-somes any day of the week.

There are two things in music I don't understand - Why Radiohead is associated with the word "pretentious", while The Shins and this "Bright Eyes" guy get away with making the most

scrupulous-idiocentric vocal arrangements and compelling words full of sugary sweet delight. (Notice the amount of ineffective, and overflowing detail).

The second is why one has to show how unique they are. In other words...Why do "Emo people" "dress up"? The make-up and all that adroginist/gothic crap they stick on their faces. Not only do they all look the same, they listen to the same music (Any of you people heard of De La Soul? Opeth? Boards of Canada?). Diversify yourselves for fawk's sake, find other music that you can hate and/or love.

I disagree with Ilkhan Kalilo's post
For one Conor Oberst doesnt use his real name because Bright Eyes is a BAND.
Also when he sings "We must memorize nine numbers and deny we have a soul" I think he's talking about the people who exploit people for money...one of the most recent cases would be Enron employees...those employees had a soul...but do you really think those guys who made millions off of the employees have a soul??
And with the whole Sugary-sweet lyrics thing...i guess it's just not your taste...
Lastly i really think that if no one showed they were diffrent that we would'nt have much of the art/music/movies that we have today...
Are you saying that we should blend in and say we are diffrent??
i think actions speak louder than words. So i really dont understand what you mean about not showing that you're diffrent...or unique

Now for the song
This is one of my favorite Bright Eyes song

We must blend into the choir, sing estatic with the whole
We must memorize nine numbers and deny we have a soul
And to this endless race for property and privilege to be won
We must run, we must run, we must run

Now how on earth would you sing "a static with the whole"? What are you fucking stupid? Fools. If you're going to type out the lyrics for a really great song, make sure you have them right!!!

A Band? Ha! "Bright Eyes" is the freakin' outlet for one guy with a lot of poetry. Which is why I have a problem with the name.

"I think he's talking about the people who exploit people for money...but do you really think those guys who made millions off of the employees have a soul??"

"[You] think"? Who is "we"? Everyone with a social security number? You see my point? He's just making cheap-shots for his audience.

According to a very basic definition, yes, those men at Enron had souls. But I don't think Connor's worried about the definition of a soul, just as long as we know he hates Corporate America.

Lastly i really think that if no one showed they were diffrent that we would'nt have much of the art/music/movies that we have today...
Are you saying that we should blend in and say we are diffrent??
i think actions speak louder than words. So i really dont understand what you mean about not showing that you're diffrent...or unique

...Emos follow paradigms. That was my point.

You can label an emo. You can't label the average joe, until you actually talk to said average joe. Emos, by and large, will never seriously dive into rap, or jazz, or electronica, or prog-rock, or anything with the slightest hint of "avant-garde".

I'd like to meet an emo who's engaged themselves in music, and doesn't know jack about Punk and Metal.

"this song got me into bright eyes... before hearing it i was biased against emo. then i heard this folk song... and man... if you don't get the song i feel bad for you. look at life again."

I do get the song. Liking a song and understanding a song are two completely different things.

"gaash! why even bother? no one forces u to listen at conor."

Why even bother responding if you have nothing relevant to say? I don't know what that's supposed to mean: "no one forces [me] to listen at connor". No one forces me to listen to anything.

Ilkhan Kalilo:

I don't agree with all you said [for example I don't think Conor is more pretentious than anybody else and I love his music - btw, Radiohead, h*ll yes!] But I have to say that you've got a really good point about emo kids, or really any kind of "alternative sub-cult". It's a shame people aren't able to laugh at themselves.

Have a nice day.

Firstly, I'd like to say that I love this song. I'm not saying it's some sort of work of art that will save the soul of the human race, but it's a fun song, it's got catchy lyrics that allow each person to interpret the song to fit their own lives. I think that's what makes it clever, because there's no right answer to the meanings, which allows everyone to make it their own.

Secondly, the point of your review is to state your opinion, regardless of if it's good or bad. So if someone wants to pan this song, they have every right. And it's sort of stupid to try to convince them that you're right and they're wrong, and makes one appear insecure, as if they view it as a personal attack. He doesn't like the song, not you.

That being said, this also isn't the forum to attack an entire genre of music. If you don't like emo music or emo kids, then Bright Eyes is CERTAINLY not going to be the band for you. Just like an emo kid shouldn't try to make you like Bright Eyes, you shouldn't inform them that they're all losers with no personality.
