Song lyrics
I heard you fell into a rabbit hole,
Covered yourself up in snow.
Baby tell me, where'd you go,
For days and days.

Did they make you stay up all night?
Did they paint your face that pasty white?
You're thirsty but your appetite gets chased away.

The sun turns us to stone.
It's a cloudy day,
But we still can't go,
Up and out that cellar door.
Till we see the moon,
We're invisible.

No one ever takes the garbage out.
A neighbor kid gets dared to touch the house.
He runs back only to announce,
There's no one home.

'Cause we paint the foil with the flame.
Smear the soda, taste butane.
For every fear that can't be named,
To calm you down.

Your heart starts skippin' steps.
So you're farther gone,
Than you might expect.
If your thoughts should turn to death,
Gotta stomp 'em out,
Like a cigarette.

i was just wondering if anyone else thinks this song bears reference to the movie donnie darko... the rabbit hole... the cellar door... the house... it just seems like there might be a connection there...

As soon as I heard "cellar door" in this song I thought that it might have something to do with Donnie Darko.
I wonder.

Uhmm I think this song might be about something a bit more classic than Donnie Darko...if any of you have read the book To Kill a Mockingbird. Well then the story of Boo Radley seems to fit these lyrics a tad bit better than a few related words to Donnie Darko. But then again I can't say for sure it's about either of these...just makes a lot more sense....

Yeah, its cleary about meth, ice, etc. "stay up all night", and "your appetite's been chased away" both show that this song's lyrics are referring to meth. I also think that "the sun turns us to stone" and "for every fear..." have something to do with it, too, since ice makes you more sensitive to light, and paranoid to some extent. And of course the "paint the foil with the flame" thing.

The children in the neighborhood assume a much more innocent idea about the abandon looking house in that they believe it is haunted. which fits perfectly as the addicts in the story are compared to ghosts. each line really ties into this idea and feeling of someone you once knew and now there gone and maybe you see them somehwere digging through the trash or on a corner and your terrifyed by there ghost.

this is one of my favorites.

i think its mostly related to donnie darko. but after reading some of alice in wonderland, it has quite a few similarities. even the first chapter of that book is called 'down the rabbit hole'

the cellar door reference has nothing to do with donnie darko. connor oberst is a lyrical genius whether he's laugh at that remark or not...
donnie darko is an overrated movie. and he wouldn't have to be influenced by it since it has nothing to do with crystal meth. the end.

This is my favourite song off digital ash, there's just something i really like about it.
References to Alive in Wonderland/To Kill A Mockingbird/Donnie Darko? Could be accidental, except the rabbit hole alice bit.

This song's just really trippy and cool.

well, i can see how some of you would see a conection to donnie darko, but as i saw people talk about it being about meth, i agreed becuase i thought it was about a form of drug also...and then i saw your discussion and it came clear its probably about meth.

and im sorry.
but KissThenFlee....

im agreeing with the one who said it has similarity with To Kill A Mocking Bird, becuase everytime im listening and he says "no one ever takes the garbage out a neighbor kid gets dared to touch the house" it reminds me of the book when Scout, Dill, and Jim get dared to touch the radley house.. anyone agree?

this song has nothing to do with donnie darko just b/c the word cellar door is in this song and happens to also be in that movie does not mean that the two are related....
this song is about hitting rock bottom... its about drugs obviously... the falling into a rabbit hole reference is from alice in wonderland but it is also being used to describe the rock bottom hole the character has fallen into in this song... there are many refereences to drugs in this song... but i agree that it is probably about meth... the lines about being covered up in snow and leaving for days and days i believe directly relates to meth and the insane high that comes along with meth...

did they make you stay up all night?
did they paint your face that pastey white
you're thirsty but your appetite gets chased away

these lyrics are deifnately about drugs they could be about how drugs can basically take on aspects of people who force you to do things that you know are wrong and illadvised... but they could also about the crowd or the people associated with drugs... these people who stay up all night pouring drugs into their body like theres no tomorrow... the people who look in the mirror and turn more and more pale with each reflection... the people who dont see the drastic changes that occur in their physical appearance from their extensive drug use... the part about losing your appetite is definately about drug use... when you are high on uppers the thought of food makes you sick... and of course you are thirsty because you are on an upper that dehydrates your body...

sun turns us to stone
it's a cloudy day
but we still can't go home
i've been out that cellar door
till we see the moon
we're invisible

these lyrics are about the paranoia associated with a meth high.... you dont want to see the day when you are on meth... the sun blinds you and the people out and about are against you and in your mind they are all staring at you and plotting aginst you. THE CELLAR DOOR quote is aboutbeing in hiding... afraid of the sunlight... the daytime.. the normal everyday world... a cellar is a tweeker sanctuary it is locked away and beneath the daytime world that tweekers fear... this whole quote is about not being able to go out... not even being able to go home... if it is daylight out... it has NOTHING to do with donnie darko...its about being a drug addict and preferring the night to the day b/c the day is scary and over crowded... nobody wants to have to act normal when they are spun out...

no one ever takes the garbage out
a neighbor kid gets dared to touch the house
he runs back only to announce
"there's no one home"

this quote is about the laziness and unmotivation that comes with drug addiction...
not wanting to take the garbage out
and the quote about the child touching the tweekerpad house shows the secrecy that tweekers keep... how it seems as if no one is even there b/c the occupants of the house are paranoid tweekers who would not make a sound if they heard anyone or anything near their house...

cause we paint the foil with the flame
smear the soda, taste butane
for every fear that can't be named
to calm you down

this quote has to be about meth bc its smoked off foil with a butane bc it burns at such a high temperature...

your heart starts skippin' steps
so you're farther gone
then you might expect
if your thoughts should turn to death
gotta stomp 'em out
like a cigarette

this quote has to do with a heart pounding meth high and it has to do with the length and duration of a meth high and the intensity of a meth high

"the negative thoughts " or" death thoughts" part ofthis quote has to do with meth withdrawal and the extreme depression that accompanies meth use....

this song is not about donnie darko... its about addiction ... this song describes meth addicition and the side effects that accompany meth addiciton... this song is about being trapped and being ina hole a holee of depression... a rock bottom hole... its about experiencing addiction and its about wasting away.... it porttrays the hopelessness of meth and the paranoid life style that comes along with it...

this is a beautiful piece of poetry that allows u to feel what addiction might feel like....

its not about donnie darko... stop reaching for meaning that doesn't exist

I think you are all right... kind of. The beauty of good lyrics or poems or whatever form of art (specially written) is that you can relate it to a lot of things at the same time. If your argument is about what HE meant to portray, I also think it's meth. And the alice in wonderland thing... its probably on purpose. I mean Alice in Wonderland is kind of a shrooms-induced ride itself too. lol.
Thing is, great works of art can be associated with a lot of things. Of course one can think of Donnie Darko, and I dunno for sure, but I can bet no one in this forum has talked to conor oberst so stop assuming he was referring to that or to Kill a Mockingbird. Maybe he has read the book and saw the movie and was in fact purposely talking about both, or just one of them or maybe neither. Maybe he didnt even saw the movie or read the damn book. God, I hate when ppl like assuming things about authors, composers, etc. I mean, you can try and guess, but arguing about it is pretty useless.
I think one can relate it to anything: loneliness, depression, adictions, drugs, alcohol, isolation, etc. It can be about SOOO many things.
