I really love this song. It makes me sad. The lyrics are so simple and yet clever at the same time.
You havent been gone very long, but it feels like a lifetime"
That part gets stuck in my head.
And whoever submitted these lyrics GAH you drive me insane. | 0 @ 25-06-2005 07:13 purple_hippo | 17,342 posts

To understand the yellow bird thing you have to have heard Poison Oak.
Poison Oak is about Conor's cousin (i think, someone close to him anyway) comitting suicide, and the effects of it on his family and how it wakes him up and he realises that he couldn't hurt them like that - he refers to this awakening as the "yellow bird i've been waiting for".
So, in this song, Conor is saying he can't carry on throwing his life away by drinking etc. because he's seen how much it hurts other people - he can't forget the yellow bird.

| I love this song. The lyrics are pretty simple, yet very good. It doesn't make me sad or anything.. it's just a great song. | 0 @ 21-07-2005 21:10 konfusion87 | 19 posts

| This song leaves me utterly broken, but hitting the repeat botton.
I think I am stuck in an abusive relationship with my iPod. | 0 @ 05-08-2006 21:02 alecs17 | 32 posts

| aww..i love this song and i cant agree with you about emmy lou, i love the way she sings, i think it really compliments conor's voice, kind of reminds me of neil young's comes a time for some reason. anyway, i interpreted the yellow bird thing differently. In the mines back in the day when they did not have good technology, they used to take a canary down the mine to check if there was a gas leak or lack of air(cant remember exactly) and if the bird died, then they would know to get out of the mine as fast as possible. Thus, conor could be using the metaphor of the yellow bird as a kind of savoir or security blanket(not exactly)...i cant think of the right word to explain this at the moment...anyway, you get the gist and thats my humble opinion...how could you forget your yellow bird? |
