Song lyrics
Born down in a dead man's town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You end up like a dog that's been beat too much
Till you spend half your life just covering up

Born in the USA
I was born in the USA
I was born in the USA
Born in the USA

Got in a little hometown jam
So they put a rifle in my hand
Send me off to a foreign land
To go and kill the yellow man

Born in the USA
I was born in the USA
I was born in the USA
I was born in the USA
Born in the USA

Come back home to the refinery
Hiring man says, 'son if it was up to me'
Went down to see my V.A. man
He said, 'son don't you understand'

I had a brother at Khe Sahn, fighting off the Viet cong
They're still there, he's all gone
He had a woman he loved in Saigon
I got a picture of him in her arms now

Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I'm ten years burning down the road
Nowhere to run, ain't got nowhere to go

Born in the USA
I was born in the USA
Born in the USA
I'm a long gone Daddy in the USA
Born in the USA
Born in the USA
Born in the USA
I'm a cool rocking Daddy in the USA

I think the lyrics are saying about how He isn't proud to be born here because of the war and stuff. Am I correct or am I misinterperating the lyrics?

But anyway, great song

I am proud to be born in the USA too, but that is NOT what this song is about at all. It is almost like he ashamed or embarrased to be an American because of how we treat war, violence, and death in this country.

Sierra always thinks along in the same lines as me,

This is such a good song.

The drum solo at the end is wickedly hard.

This song isn't about not being proud of america, or hating america. It takes two countries to have a war, and to just blame america because they did or didn't do something is just wrong. That's not what the song is about. It's about an american soldier who faught in vietnam. It has nothing to do with be ashamed of America, the song is strictly about the soldier, watch VH1, I usually don' but they had the greatest 80's song countdown on.

this song is about the soldiers who came back from vietaim after all this time, and nobody's doing anything for them.
they have to start all over after all this time of fighting for their country.
it's about giving it all for your country and getting non back...

I think part of the reason this song is misinterpreted is because other than "Born in the USA" you can't hear the lyrics very clearly.
