Country crooner Bucky Covington will vie for your vote of applause when he tests his vocal chords at the Clarke County Fair in August.
The American Idol contestant, who placed eighth in the competition two years ago, became a break-out star after competing in the fifth season of the television talent show.
“We like what the people will like,” said Randy Milleson, the fair committee's chairman.
Previous headliners include well-known country artists Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, Trace Atkins and Martina McBride.
Covington might not have gotten enough of America's votes to make him a winner in 2006, but he has since won over the hearts of the nation's country western fans.
With his North Carolina drawl, Covington has become a mainstay on country music radio stations. With songs such as "A Different World," Covington croons of days past riding in a car with no seat belt and hiding from daddy's waist belt.
Now, fans can hear him live when he headlines at the fair in Berryville on Sat., Aug. 16.
While not every artist performing at the fair has been of the country genre, Milleson has found that country music works best.
“Of course, we are a country fair,” Milleson said.
A self-taught guitarist, bassist and drummer, Covington has earned much acclaim with fans. His video for "A Different World" was nominated for two Country Music Awards: USA Weekend Breakthrough Video of the Year and Video Director of the Year, according to his Web site.
He currently lives in Nashville and will perform at the Grand Ole Opry in May.
His self-titled debut album was released in April 2007 and debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Country Albums, according to his Web site.
Additional performers at this summer's fair will include two gospel groups. Sherri and Jeff Easter and the Lewis family will perform on Thurs., Aug. 14, while the Audio Outlaws from Winchester will perform country music on Mon., Aug. 11.
Covington will perform on the Clarke County Fairgrounds. Grandstand tickets are $20 and track seating is $25. Ticket sales begin June 7. Visit the Web site at www.clarkecountyfair.org.
