Remember Bucky Covington from season five of ''American Idol?'' The guy with the shoulder-length blond hair who sang his way to the No. 8 spot?
He's got a few hits under his belt now and is heading to mid-Michigan this summer to perform at the WKCQ Wam Bam Country Jam at Part of the Midland County Fair, the Wam Bam Country Jam has brought several country artists to the area over the years: Sugarland, Emerson Drive, Keith Anderson, Trace Adkins and Jason Aldean.
Bucky Covington promises his concert, which also features country hitmaker Craig Morgan, will deliver fans no disappointments.
''It's a great variety,'' he said, praising the hard work of his band. ''We put on a really wide-open show.''
The 30-year-old artist will sing hits like ''A Different World'' and ''It's Good to Be Us'' as well as some cover tunes.
''We do some stuff people definitely won't expect,'' said Covington.
Morgan, who performed at Bay City's State Theatre last year, can be expected to play signature hits like ''Almost Home,'' ''Redneck Yacht Club,'' ''That's What I Love About Sunday'' and ''International Harvester.''
A native of Rockingham, N.C., Covington says he calls Nashville home these days, although he admits he's rarely home.
''We do a lot of travelin' now,'' he said during a phone interview between shows.
The best part about performing live?
''Hands down is when the crowd sings back your songs,'' he said. ''It's hard to compete with that.''
Asked how an artist like himself goes about selecting songs, Covington said it's really not that complicated. It simply has to be something you can believe in.
''You know when you listen to the radio and you hear a song you really like. It's like that. It's that principle,'' he said.
Covington says looking back, he now realizes just how little he knew when he joined the ranks of ''American Idol.''
''I don't know (expletive deleted),'' he said, excusing his language. ''It's so fast-paced.''
But it also provided a once-in-a-lifetime chance to introduce his name to audiences in America and beyond.
''It was great. It was just a huge help that it gave me,'' he said.
There were opportunities that he probably never would have had otherwise as an artist: sitting next to Stevie Wonder and singing ''Superstition,'' sharing the stage with members of Queen.
''It was just fun times. It was awesome,'' he said.
Covington, who has an identical twin brother, Rocky, says he has many fond memories of the show, like when his brother got mistaken for him at the airport.
''He was on the way out to L.A. to come see me when I was on 'American Idol.' He was at the Atlanta airport and this woman comes up to him and says, 'You're Bucky Covington.' He goes, 'No I'm his twin brother.' And she goes 'Whatever.'''
Rocky continued to profess that he really was Bucky's twin but the woman said, ''Sure, you just don't want to be recognized.''
Covington, whose real first name is William, says he doesn't have many spare moments to watch ''Idol'' these days. He was, however, in David Cook's neck of the woods - Kansas City - when the former bartender was selected as this year's winner. The place just went nuts, he said.
Tickets for the show are on sale by calling the Midland County Fair box office at (989) 835-7901 or through Star Tickets Plus locations, including all Meijer stores.
Tickets cost $37.50 for track seating and $15.50 for grandstand seating. Both are reserved seating.
