There's somethin' happenin' here.
What it is ain't exactly clear.
There's a man with a gun over there
A-tellin' me I've got to beware.
I think it's time we stop.
Children, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's goin' down.
There's battle lines bein' drawn.
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong.
Young people speakin' their minds
A-gettin' so much resistance from behind.
I think it's time we stop.
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's goin' down.
What a field day for the heat.
A thousand people in the street
Singin' songs and a-carryin' signs
Mostly sayin' hooray for our side.
It's time we stop.
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's goin' down.
Paranoia strikes deep.
Into your life it will creep.
It starts when you're always afraid.
Step out of line, the MAN come and take you away.
You better stop.
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's goin'..
You better stop.
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's goin'..
You better stop.
Now, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's goin'..
You better stop.
Children, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's goin'..

Singin' songs and a-carryin' signs
Mostly sayin' hooray for our side".... "Step out of line, the MAN come and take you away." I dunno maybe that's just me but it sounds like he's a hippie in the song But it's awesome none-the-less

vocal oh my gosh. here we go.
Buffalo Springfield is talking about the happenings during the summer of love ( which who don't know is 1967). This is the year/summer of revolution. The protests were insane, death to hippies, the 'raising' of the pentagon, the smoke pot protest. Vietnam protests, etc. What was happening in the Sunset Strip in L.A. is what gave root to this song. Hundreds of young people were protesting, and the police would come out and beat them down, telling everyone to go home. In Amsterdam they called these 'happenings'. The police would drive around saying 'go home, there's no happenings here', which only made more people go. This is what gave root to the song 'for what it's worth'. IT's about people finally taking a stand for what they believe in, back in the sixties.
Just a question, how could it be about soemthing that happend in 1967 if the CD that it's on came out in 1966? One year BEFORE the events that encouraged the song.
Good song by the way. I love it

vocal This song was written and released as a single in January of 1967. Stephen Stills wrote this song in a reaction to the closing of Pandora's Box, a night club on Hollywood's Sunset Strip, and a riot that broke out in the summer of 1966, due to young club-goers protesting the closing of the club. It has been misinterpreted as an anti-war song, when in reality it calls for listeners to take a step back, re-examine and re-evaluate their society, and do something about it. It's an amazing song indeed for that very reason.
