It must be your skin that I'm sinking in
It must be for real cause now I can feel And I didn't mind, it's not my kind It's not my time to wonder why Everything gone white, everything's grey Now you're here, now you're away I don't want this, remember that I'll never forget where you're at Don't let the days go by Glycerine, Glycerine I'm never alone, I'm alone all the time Are you at one or do you lie We live in a wheel where everyone steals But when we rise it's like strawberry fields I treated you bad, you bruised my face Couldn't love you more, you've got a beautiful taste Don't let the days go by Could've been easier on you I couldn't change though I wanted to Should have been easier by three Our old friend fear and you and me Glycerine, Glycerine Don't let the days go by Glycerine Don't let the days go by Glycerine, Glycerine Glycerine, Glycerine Bad moon white again Bad moon white again As she falls around me I needed you more when we wanted us less I could not kiss, just regress It might just be clear simple and plain Well that's just fine, that's just one of my names Don't let the days go by It could've been easier on you, you, you Glycerine, Glycerine Glycerine, Glycerine |

4 posts | This is my abosloute favourite song, on the strength of its lyrics. They describe perfectly a mutually abusive relationship and its sense of anger and hopelessness and lust. The idea that it could be something good and healthy, but neither person can change.
"I treated you bad You bruised my face Couldn't love you more youve got a beautiful taste" Perfect. Just perfect. And the acoustic version of this song is utterly orgasmic. |

15 posts | My favorite line is "I'm never alone, I'm alone all the time" it makes so much sense, yet none at all. To me this song seems as if every line contradicts the last. It's confusing, but at the same time it makes so much sense.
This is by far my favorite song of all time. It describes the relationship I have with my boyfriend - the ups and downs, and the bittersweetness. I have always told myself that I could see myself walking down the aisle of my wedding to this song. I know it sounds really strange since the song mostly revolves around heart break, but it's such a beautiful song, and I love it. |

1 posts | I guess a million people can find a million different interpretations to this song, being how the lyrics are a little ambiguous and the true inspiration for this song is locked away in the writer's head. "Don't let the days go by," though, is universal and we can all understand, whether we're telling our ex girlfriend/boyfriend not to waste their time chasing false promises, or telling our friends that are going through a rough time that it'll all get better. For me, this song isn't really about gloomy relationships or confusing breakups, it seems to me that the couple that the song is about is really crazy about each other, being that, even after they've broken up, they end up seeing each other off and on; "Now you're here, now you're away." It might seem strange, but I really think that this song is about hope, about not letting that special person in your life be "the one that got away"and doing everything in your power to make things right. A lot of times reason tells us to just let go, but the heart is a lot harder to convince. |

July 1996 We talked for a while about 'Glycerine,' the ballad that brought Bush to a mass American audience. Gavin's lyrics can be a bit impressionistic, so I ask what inspired the song. He's embarrassed to admit that it's a love song- he thinks there are too many of them already- but defends himself by saying it's about doomed love rather than 'gooey romantic love.' More Specifically, it's about the estranged Jasmine. Gavin's learning that his dreams can come true and he can still not get what he really wants. And the title? 'It's nitroglycerine, as opposed to hand soap. I'm fascinated by an inanimate object that can cause so much destruction. It can sit there like a fat ward, and then it blows up...' Gavin's voice trails off, and for a moment it's hard to tell whether he's talking about high explosives, his troubled love life, or his musical career. |

1 posts | I favor the first opinion posted in explanation on this song. (BTW, the much later post that said "could have been easier to free"... the words are "should have been easier by three" - I'm reading it out of my CD insert right now to verify that.) While it's true that any lyric is open to personal interpretation (the nature of music as an art is to reach the individual where they stand at the moment of hearing), certain experiences in relationships will give a person insight to a song like Glycerine that could not be gained through technical knowledge.
Having been through almost 8 years of marriage now, marrying late in life, and knowing almost nothing about each other at the time (first date - very Dharma & Greg, I know), I can frankly say that Glycerine speaks heavily to the "best of times/worst of times", bittersweetness that only being deeply in love can deliver. I almost cannot hear this song without pouring tears every time because it's popped up at stressful moments in my married life and he always stops and sings it to me when we hear it. The lyrics are without a doubt a form of apology for having caused undue pain. ["Could've been easier on you..."] I know there are times when he has regrets for disagreements we've had. Anyone who has ever had an intense interaction that ended in a heated and regrettable face-slap will understand the "bruised my face" line. It only happened once with us in all these years, but it makes the song even more of a reminder to grow beyond those mistakes. "Don't let the days go by" is the line that everyone goes back to with complete understanding, I think. I've thought a lot about that and not letting opportunities slip through your fingers. That could mean living life to it's fullest. It could also mean simply gazing deep into someone's eyes and sincerely telling them that you love them so much that your life would not be the same if they were not in it. Missing that kind of opportunity is the most tragic loss anyone could inflict on themself in life. Anyone in a lengthy marriage knows there are times when you cannot kiss... just regress... and "wanting us less" sometimes ends a relationship for good. Be thankful if you are blessed with one that lasts. I think that's the best message you could glean from it. Live opportunities. Remember joys. Thanks to everyone who has posted interpretations and personal insights - I enjoyed reading them. It's a special song and I'm glad to see others have had meaningful memories from it. |
