Carrie Begins Vocal Sessions for Next CD

Carrie Underwood began her first vocal sessions for her next album on Tuesday morning (April 17) in Nashville, one day after winning three CMT Music Awards for her video, "Before He Cheats." She told reporters backstage at the show that her second album will definitely be released this year, although no release date has been set.

"As of now, it seems to be a lot of up-tempo stuff, but I personally love the songs," she said. "It seems to be another easy album situation, in that everybody agrees. I think that's rare, but it happened on the last album, and that one did pretty well. We're all agreeing on songs, so it's going easy so far."

Underwood's 2005 debut album, Some Hearts, has sold more than 5 million copies and includes "Jesus, Take the Wheel," "Don't Forget to Remember Me," "Before Before He Cheats" and "Wasted." Already popular with fans because of her exposure on American Idol, she grabbed even more industry respect earlier this year by winning two Grammys, including best new artist.

She has already chosen all the songs for the new album, including some she co-wrote. Now she has to narrow down the tracks that will make the final cut.

"Right now I'm in the process of recording too many songs," she explained. "Fortunately -- and unfortunately -- they're turning out so great, I think it's going to be hard to decide which ones stay and which ones we keep and reserve for something else."

"I have co-written several of the ones that are probably for sure going to be on the album," she added. "It's amazing to get in there and really be a lot more [involved in] the recording process. I was a huge part of it last time, but this album is even more so. I found that I'm not a horrible writer, so that's nice. It's a little more me, and [songwriting] is another talent that I hope to develop."

Underwood performed "Before He Cheats" on the CMT Music Awards show and confessed she had been praying that she wouldn't fall down in the middle of her song. She also presented the breakthrough video award to a very excited Taylor Swift earlier in the evening.

"She about knocked me over," Underwood told reporters. "She was shaking. And that was me last year. It was amazing to be able to present that award to somebody who's up and coming. She was so excited, and it's always nice to see people who are so excited to win awards."

The CMT Music Awards are voted on by fans, and Underwood took the night's top prize for video of the year, beating out selections from Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith and Rascal Flatts. She also captured a female video trophy and shared a win with Roman White for director of the year.

Asked about winning an awards show's top prize for the first time, Underwood cheerfully replied, "Obviously, I am so excited. It was really fun making the video, and I have really amazing fans. So you put the two together and you pull off something like this. I'm very excited and very lucky."
