Song lyrics
gold teeth and a curse for this town were all in my mouth
only, i don't know how they got out, dear
turn me back into the pet i was when we met
i was happier then with no mind-set

and if you'd 'a took to me like
a gull takes to the wind
well, i'd 'a jumped from my trees
and i'd a danced like the king of the eyesores
and the rest of our lives would 'a fared well

new slang when you notice the stripes, the dirt in your fries
hope it's right when you die, old and bony
dawn breaks like a bull through the hall
never should of called
but my heads to the wall and i'm lonely

and if you'd 'a took to me like
a gull takes to the wind
well, i'd 'a jumped from my trees
and i'd a danced like the king of the eyesores
and the rest of our lives would 'a fared well

god speed all the bakers at dawn may they all cut their thumbs,
and bleed into the buns 'till they melt away

i'm looking in on the good life i might be doomed never to find
without a trust or flaming fields am i too dumb to refine?
and if you'd 'a took to me like
well i'd a danced like the queen of the eyesores
and the rest of our lives would 'a fared well

Still cant see why it matters how people heard of them...Why not just be happy that this great band is spreading to the masses Who cares if a band is mainstream or not? You listen to a band because you like their music, right? At least thats what im doing....

I, like almost everyone, heard this from the great movie Garden State. They're now my fav band by a mile which is strange as other bands i like include feeder, brand new, libertines, foo fighters, killers and the used. And yeh no one in the UK has heard of them either

Funny story: I asked my friend if she liked The Shins. She says "You mean those things below your knees?"
I nearly died laughing.

I see the song as a sadly poignent ballad addressed to an ex love. He is saying that if he could go back to the he was when they met, and this time she would "cling to him" meaning stay with him, he would have been happy, and they both would have had better lives. At least thats what i get from the song. This is my favorit song by the Shins.

Music Snobbery- " Oh I knew the Shins before everyone else!!!!" Whoop-de-do!!! So what?. Music is about appreciation and discovery. So if people discovered them through a soundtrack to a film isnt that good thing? More exposure to more great music! Dont you think the band advocated the use of their music to get that desired effect!

Tiny Dancer by Elton John from Almost Famous is another case in point. Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters played that and pre-empted it by saying he discovered it by watching the movie. Does that mean he's less of a music lover/ fan. Dont think so. Do you?

Please lets be joyous and happy that good music must spread and dont be pompous and precious about bands. SHARE and LOVE. Peace be with you all!

Amazing song. may i ask how you discoverd the Shins H8PEOPLE? (ironic...look at the user name)

It really shouldn't matter how people find bands....i mean it is kind of the point that they do find them...otherwise the band wouldn't waste their time making music.

I really liked this song, i found out about The Shins watching Garden State but that third part of the lyrics (my English is not that good, so I can only think of the word "part") that starts with "new slang when you notice the stripes, " until the end "but my heads to the wall and i'm lonely"... I really didnt get the meaning. I got the rest, not that.

Anyone could make it clear for me?

Oh... I love this song.
I'm extremely proud because the shins are from my hometown.
=]]
Not to say that i knew about them before they got popular, but i stumbled upon some of their music and really liked it and then i asked my brother if he had heard of them and was like, "Yeah, did you know they're from here?"
And so they are.
