Title : Hotel California
-----------------
On a dark desert highway,
cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas,
rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance,
I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself
This could be Heaven or this could be Hell
Then she lit up a candle
and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor
I thought I heard them say
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year
Any time of year
You can find it here
Her mind is Tiffany-twisted,
she got the Mercedes Benz
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys,
that she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard,
sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember,
some dance to forget
So I called up the Captain,
Please bring me my wine
He said, 'we haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine'
And still those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
They're livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise
What a nice surprise
Bring your alibis
Mirrors on the ceiling
The pink champagne on ice
And she said 'we are all just prisoners here, of our own device'
And in the master's chambers
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast
Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
'Relax,' said the night man
We are programmed to receive
You can checkout any time you like
But you can never leave

And btw, I know the lyrics by heart.. I sang it couple of times and then it just got stuck into my head.
That Wurn Snell of Colitas story sounds quite thrilling. | 18-01-2005 13:48 FatJo | 3,059 posts

From what i hear this song is really satanic. Ive also heard that if you play it back you get some chanting and it says like praise the 666 and a lot of crap like that. Also, when they are gathered in the masters chamber and theyre stabbing the beast, its really supposed to be a sacrifice thats making fun of the last supper which is in the catholic religion. but great song, beautiful guitar, and awsome melody. | 19-03-2005 17:27 sarah_2204 | 3,596 posts

Welcome to the Hotel California!
in my opinion, it's certainly about drugs...
"You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave"
That is how drugs work.
You can't leave them once you're addicted.

Hotel California is about the STATE of California (well, at least the southern bit.) What Don Henly's saying that California is an addicting place, and that no one REALLY leaves there.
The whole song's just a metaphor of California. | 09-10-2005 01:45 SnapLuvsCurly | 8 posts
| This song is definitely one of my favorite Eagles songs ever.
For a while I believed the rumors that it was about the band being Satanic or what have you. At least the song itsself being Satanic. The lyrics are seductively convincing towards such a notion.
Besides, the beautiful adio make one feel that it is the strongest possibility. However, I did visit the site of a previous replyer
http://www.snopes.com/music/songs/hotel.htm
and it was indeed less satisfying of an answer...but it seemed so accurate. What it basically said is that the Eagles wrote it to describe a "loss of innocence"....or such in the music industry and lusts of the materialistic world.
wow, is what i say. It's just as believable..and not as dark. I'm all for that!
Also, there was a noter who made a connection to the novel "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding. I recently read this novel, and when I listened to this song I also made the same connection that noter did about the line that says
"They stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast."
In the story the "beast" is something that takes form in their minds. After killing a boy stranded on the island with them named 'Simon', the 'cheif' of the boys said that the beast was not dead. The murder of the boy Simon who they mistook for the supposid "beast" made no difference in the beast's existence. It seems so familiar, one who read the novel and listened carefully to these lyrics would be blind not to notice it.
I researched this topic and found that the Eagles CD "Hell Freezes Over" was released in 1976. Also, the novel "The Lord of the Flies" was published originially in 1954. There is a slight possibility that it could have been an influence, but honestly i believe it to be coincidence.
"the beast" could be a metaphor to any internal 'demons'....or even problems in the industries of the world. in particular musical industry in southern california. I guess we'll just never know.

ps...Look at the website i copied from another note...some of the theories of the song are quite humorous.
pss. I dont know wether or not the site is credible and accurate, but it seems so.
