I don't know exactly what is it about, but i have an idea: there are compounds of lithium (lithium carbonate, citrate) which are used as mood stabilizers. Principally, for mainc depression alias bipolar disorder. It is about highs and lows; the deep and depressive feeling and in other time the mania, euphoria.
