| Song lyrics |
Crashed on the floor when I moved in
This little bungalow
With some strange new friends
Stayed up too late, and I'm too thin
We promised each other it's 'til the end
Now we're spinning empty bottles
It's the five of us
With pretty-eyed boys girls die to trust
I can't resist the day
No, I can't resist the day
Jenny screams out and it's no pose
'Cause when she dances she goes and goes
Beer through the nose on an inside joke
And I'm so excited I haven't spoken
And she's so pretty
And she's so sure
Maybe I'm more clever than a girl like her
Summer's all in bloom
Summer is ending soon
It's alright and it's nice not to be so alone
But I hold on to our secrets in white houses
Maybe I'm a little bit over my head
I come undone at the things he's said
And he's so funny in his bright red shirt
We were all in love and we all got hurt
I sneaked into his car's cracked leather seat
The smell of gasoline in the summer heat
Boy, we're going way too fast
It's all too sweet to last
It's alright and I put myself in his hands
But I hold on to our secrets in white houses
Love or something ignites in my veins
And I pray it never fades in white houses
My first time
Hard to explain
Rush of blood
Oh
And a little bit of pain
On a cloudy day, it's more common than you think
He's my first mistake
Maybe you were all faster than me
We gave each other up so easily
These silly little wounds will never mend
I feel so far from where I've been
So I go and I will not be back here again
I'm gone as the day is fading on white houses
I lie
Wrote my injuries all in the dust
In my heart is the five of us in white houses
And you
Maybe you'll remember me
What I gave is yours to keep in white houses
In white houses
In white houses

GET A NEW SONG!!!!
Vanessa Carlton did a beautiful job of describing her first time. I'd like to see one of you who disagrees with the lyrics to try and do a better job. part of what makes this song so awesome is the fact that she doesn't beat around the bush while trying to describe her experience. A LOT if people relate to that EXACT part! don't try to make her song something it's not. for all of you who can't accept it what? are you 12 or just really sheltered? i LOVE whoever it was that posted....
**lifes not rated 'PG'...X baby all the way! lol

Yeah, I love this song as well. There's something about it that makes you feel as if you know it alreadyas if you've heard it many times before. As for the White Houses ref...I think by White Houses she means it's all new, (unpainted?) but also like innocent and pure. First time out of home, moving away and into a new house with her friends. A blank canvas (ooh). Of course it wasn't all that innocent, but that's part of it, the contradiction. And now there won't be anymore white houses... You know how she describes the guy as having a bright red shirt, see that can stand for him being exciting, etc. She's using the color to add meaning.
Of course, I could be completely wrong in my thinking. This is just IMHO. Perhaps she just chose it cause it sounds good Or maybe it's got to do with the houses where she lives... | 10-10-2004 00:13 maybee523 | 6 posts

i definetly agree 100% w/ closestofall and dont agree w/ sparksbritt. i mean, come on? how old are yall? this is a beautiful song and without that stanza it wouldnt make it any better bc (in case you didnt notice) that is what the WHOLE song is about. i am expecially bewildered when ppl can call this song 'sketchy' when almost ALL rap songs are tons worse, and people never say anything about them. i give this song two BIG thumbs up and cant wait to buy this album. this song is so beautiful. very [i]meets pop culture plus a piano. nice one carlton | 10-10-2004 05:22 LeAnG | 3 posts

I totally agree that this is an amazing song. Here is my take on it:
The entire song is about losing your virginity. The 'white houses' represent innocence. She went into this bungalow inexperierenced, and she obviously lost her virginity there, which is why she later says she'll be back there. There was also sybolism in the red shirt. The boy was exciting for her, his shirt represented love, passion, romance.
I don't agree that this had anything to do with summer camp. These people are older than that, in their very late teens early twenties. They are sharing a summer bungalow. Also, I don't agree that the five friends are her old buddies. The very beginning of the song says this. It says she moved in with 'some strange new friends' I feel that these people were all more experienced and possibly a year or two older than she. which is why she says 'maybe you were all faster than me' I think that she met these friends through her boyfriend.
At the end of the song when it says that they all gave each other up so easily, i think it simply means they all drifted. The end of summer came and they didn't try to stay in touch.
The summer also holds symbolism. The summer is a time where everything is in bloom, as she says. She was growing in this experience and learning.
The song is beautiful, romantic, and heartfelt. It isn't sketchy at all. If people don't think that part should be in there, they don't understand the meaning of the song at all. These lyrics are subtle, express truth and compassion, and truly speak about the song. | 10-10-2004 05:25 LeAnG | 3 posts

This is a great song and it really hits close to home. I don't agree with what people say about this song being sketchy. Compared to some of Eminem/or similar's lyrics, you have absolutely no argument. I love the video as well! (that skirt she's wearing rocks!- it reminds me of the one Avril wore in My Happy Ending) I think this song is very emotional and is sure to get in the top ten here in Aussie! | 17-10-2004 01:04 fayeza | 36 posts

I've seen some people wondering what this song was about. My take (and this is what I get from the song) is a young girl that has just moved away from home. She's met new friends and is insecure about herself. She loses her virginity (that part is pretty obvious in the song) and then the friends that swore to stay together forever, drifted apart.
It seems to be a song about growing up...
Anyway, I love V.C. and hope this song gets more airplay. I love it! | 20-10-2004 02:35 ibadancinqt28 | 3 posts

When I read the lyrics, I was kinda shocked when I saw the part about the blood and the pain. I didn't realize that was even in the song when I saw the video this morning, I was too distracted by the beauty of Vanessa Cartlon I had previously over looked. The lyrics some how sounds outta place and isn't completely necessary since that experience is extremely common. But, later by the end of the song you hear what the entire thing is about (her summer experiences, losing her virginity, and the all too cliche regreting it afterwards). So all in all, it's a good song...a VERY VERY GOOD SONG!!! | 31-10-2004 04:00 AsukaLangley | 6 posts
