I know the pieces fit
'Cause I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smouldering
Fundamental differing
Pure intention juxtaposed
Will set two lovers' souls in motion
Disintegrating as it goes
Testing our communication
The light that feuled our fire then
Has a burned a hole between us so
We cannot see to reach an end
Crippling our communication
I know the pieces fit
'Cause I watched them tumble down
No fault, none to blame
It doesn't mean I don't desire to
Point the finger, blame the other
Watch the temple topple over
To bring the pieces back together
Rediscover communication
The poetry
That comes from the squaring off between
And the circling is worth it
Finding beauty in the dissonance
There was a time that the pieces fit
But I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smouldering
Strangled by our coveting
I've done the math enough to know
The dangers of our second guessing
Doomed to crumble unless we grow
And strengthen our communication
Cold silence has
A tendency to
Atrophy any
Sense of compassion
Between supposed brothers
Between supposed lovers
(sometimes says "lovers" the first
time and then "brothers" in concert)
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit (crescendo)

vocal schism isn't anything religious. The Schism was a historical event in which protestants split from the catholic church... hense lutheran/ methodist/ Baptist. But the word schism is a break or faulter in anything. The song can be taken many ways, i think its about someone who cant find it in himself to accept faults of somekind, and rekindle a relationship. What do you think.
Beeautiful song, i love how this band portrays the purpose of their music and the feelings that are important to them. The depth, darkness/light, and meaning that can be found in tool makes me tremble.

vocal Im not sure what the song is about, or at least what Tool the band says its about...but it can be interpreted lots of ways. If anyone needs help, Schism is a seperation, a split...as most of you probally guessed from the lyrics.
Anyhoo...it could be about a seperation in religion, a divorce, a broken relationship, or about a fued between family members.
Really its all in how you see it, what you've lived through and such...This was the first song by Tool I heard...and it still is among my favorites by them...not so much now since I have 2 of their cds...especially Laterlus, which alongside this one there is The Grudge, Parabola, The Patient, Parabol, Laterlus, among many others...Still I love Tool, and I hope they will release a new CD, and I hope APC doesn't signify the end of Tool, still APC kicks ass too.
Those of you looking into what the song is about need to look a little deeper. Everyone tries to relate a song to their personal life, but try thinking outside of that and what other possibilities it could be. This whole discussion itself is a 'schism' so retrace and start from the beginning. Communication is a puzzle, but certain peices go together better than others, and lead to a better understanding of what is to be portrayed.
Those of you putting down others for calling Maynard a God etc., and those of you calling Maynard a God...no comment lol...your no better than each other.

vocal Classic Tool at ut's very best.
Well, I think it's about lack of communication in relationship and thus how they eventually break down but yeah..as with all great songs they are open for interpretation.

vocal This is by far my favorite song. I love the acceptance of abusive relationships from the point of view of the abuser. Even though its meant for general relationships I like to see it as a love song. Anyway, great song!

vocal I really like this song. The bass riff is great as well throughout the song. And Maynard does great as well here
