There's a shadow just behind me
Shrouding every step I take
Making every promise empty
Pointing every finger at me
Waiting like a stalking butler
Who upon the finger rests
Murder now, the path that must be
Just because the son has come
Jesus blows his fucking whistle,
something but the past and done?
Jesus, blows his fucking whistle,
something but the past and done?
Why can't we not be sober?
I just want to start this over
And why can't we drink forever?
I just want to start this over
I am just a worthless liar
I am just an imbecile
I will only complicate you
Trust in me and fall as well
I will find a center in you
I will chew it up and leave
I will work to elevate you
Just enough to bring you down
Mother Mary, won't you whisper?
Something bout what's past and done
Mother Mary, won't you whisper?
Something bout what's past and done
Why can't we not be sober?
I just want to start this over
And why can't we sleep forever?
I just want to start this over
why?
I am just a worthless liar
I am just an imbecile
I will only complicate you
Trust in me and fall as well
I will find a center in you
I will chew it up and leave
Trust me
Trust me
Trust me
Trust me
Trust me
Why can't we not be sober?
I just want to start things over
And why can't we sleep forever?
I just want to start this over
why?
I want it, what I want it
I want it, what I want it
I want it, what I want it
I want it, what I want it

vocal Tool is an experience. Listen to the sound that comes in behind "I will find a center in you". I love this band because of the structure and purpose behind what they create. Every member of this band is musically/philosophiclly genius.

vocal i don't care if maynard sings about snot. I love his voice. He's an amazing musician and to see him with tool or apc in concert is something everone should have a chance to do. Wonderous concerts.. things i'll never forget. Brilliant, Maynard, just brilliant.
Like somebody said before, Tool's music is very open ended and available for many different opinions and interpretations. So I don't think people should argue back and forth about what the meaning is. Everybody will have a different scope on the song meaning, even if it is not the same as Maynard's meaning. Who knows what goes through his head anyway..

Reflection
Anyway, great song all around. Let's try not to confuse ourselves by trying to understand it's meaning.
Although, the Shadow referenced may be similar to the Shadow mentioned in Forty-Six & 2. Where your Shadow is all the qualities that are opposite of the ones you possess.
For example, if you were a peaceful person, your shadow would be war-minded. If you were Republican, your shadow would be Democrat.
Understand? I don't really feel like explaining much.

vocal This song is awesome.
It's open to interpretation, but I will say the song has absolutely NOTHING to do with alcohol in the literal sense. Being Sober, and sleeping/drinking forever, appear to be metaphors for how we live our lives.
Abstaining from pleasure, or over-indulging. The song seems to reflect a cynicism that we could ever actually live sober (abstain from pleasure, live the monk-ish life, etc.)
Someone said earlier that the Shadow is responsible for negative visions of self, and I would say that's pretty accurate. Either that, or the Shadow is a metaphor for humanity's stigma (inability to live pure).
The Character also seems to be pleading with Jesus to offer up something useful, instead of more of what's past and done.
Likewise for Mother Mary.
I just love how the end winds down with him pining
I want, what I want
I want, what I want
It seems the Character yearns for something (understanding, maybe?) but he's not sure what it is.
Anyways, totally badass song, and one of Tool's best.

vocal This is by far my favorite song. I love the acceptance of abusive relationships from the point of view of the abuser. Even though its meant for general relationships I like to see it as a love song. Anyway, great song!
whoops. Meant to write that on Stinkfist. Sober though is within my top favorite songs. Its one of his many many many great statements on organized religion.

vocal Sober is the song that got me into Tool. I don't know what it is about it, but it's still one of my personal favorites. And Xed it's about a close friend of the band being an addict, and how if you become a junkie, its your fault
