| Song lyrics |
Step one you say, "We need to talk."
He walks, you say, "Sit down, it’s just a talk."
He smiles politely back at you,
You stare politely right on through,
Some sort of window to your right.
As he goes left and you stay right,
Between the lines of fear and blame,
You begin to wonder why you came.
Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend,
Somewhere along in the bitterness.
And I would have stayed up with you all night,
Had I known how to save a life.
Let him know that you know best,
'Cause after all you do know best.
Try to slip past his defense,
Without granting innocence.
Lay down a list of what is wrong.
The things you’ve told him all along.
Pray to god he hears you.
And I pray to god he hears you and,
Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend,
Somewhere along in the bitterness.
And I would have stayed up with you all night,
Had I known how to save a life.
As he begins to raise his voice,
You lower yours and grant him one last choice.
"Drive until you lose the road,
Or break with the ones you’ve followed."
He will do one of two things.
He will admit to everything,
Or he’ll say he’s just not the same,
And you’ll begin to wonder why you came.
Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend,
Somewhere along in the bitterness.
And I would have stayed up with you all night,
Had I known how to save a life.
Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend,
Somewhere along in the bitterness.
And I would have stayed up with you all night,
Had I known how to save a life.
How to save a life.
How to save a life.

This song touches me in a diffrent way. I, myself have attempted suicied several times. It has been my friends that have saved me. I sit here and I read the lyrics I think about them and how I know that I can call them anytime, day or night and they will be there for me. Even just so I have someone to tell me that they love me and let me cry. The one line that really hit me "And I would have stayed up with you all night, Had I known how to save a life" because that is exactly how they are. I know that if I was to do it for the rest of their lives be saying that and what could I have done. My friends are my true family and they truly me the world to me. Thank you guys for everything.

| LOVE this song. LOVE The Fray.
This song is amazing. It's just... amazing. I love it, adore it completely.
And although I don't want it to be overplayed on the radio, they could at least play it a LITTLE more often? Maybe? | 06-12-2006 16:58 rockerchick07 | 21 posts

| this song was written by The Fray's lead singer when he went to this camp, and he made a friend that was addicted to crack and he tried to help him, but it didn't work. that's what this song is about. so think about that the next time you haer this song. | 08-12-2006 23:52 rooneychick | 9 posts

When you take some time to let the words sink in, the rhythm just takes you away and you get lost in deep, deep thought. I love this song, both ways. It's just a magnificent song, it reaches really deep down in all of us.

This song is sad. I'm doing a french book report right now and we had to chose our favorite part of the book and pick a song to go with it. The book was about Mathieu talking to Alice as she's in her coffin after she recently killed herself and he's wishing he had of talked to her one last time. | 17-12-2006 01:39 PeaceAmongChaos | 39 posts
| I have something else to add to that, it also reminds me so much of me and my best friend. | 17-12-2006 18:34 monthz | 28 posts
| i just learned this song on the piano, it's my second favourite the fray song i loooove it. look after you is my favourite, listen to that one for sure if you haven't yet! | 19-12-2006 10:38 heat84 | 87 posts
| OMG they made another video for this song and its more depressing than the first one. Are they trying to start a suicide epidemic or something? OK its probably intended to send the opposite message but sure doesn't seem that way to me, for the most part at least. | 19-12-2006 10:40 heat84 | 87 posts
| I do love this song and The Frey's music though. I've heard this song enough times that it doesn't get me down anymore. | 20-12-2006 01:18 wordcatyo | 32 posts

I freaking love this song! I sob whenever I hear it! It makes me think of everything in my life and all the people I've lost. For some reason this part is where I completley lose it:
As he begins to raise his voice
You lower yours and grant him one last choice
Drive to you lose the road
Or break with the ones who followed
He will do one of two things
He will admit to everything
Or he'll say he's just not the same
And you'll begin to wonder why you came
I just start to sob uncontrollably whenever I hear this song, It is one of my all time favorite songs. | 20-12-2006 01:39 pnkpigg2 | 29 posts

I reeeeeeeeeally like this song. It's not so much the lyrics as it is the whole song in general. I guess I just happen to like these types of songs. Oh and I like Over My Head. | 26-12-2006 23:52 Effyness | 23 posts
| This song is good also because the words have some kind of meaning. It's not like most songs you hear nowadays where it's always talking about heartbreak or it's abusive to women. I'm glad songs like this are still popular. | 31-12-2006 00:58 MidnyteFox | 15 posts

| this song is special and so do some other songs of The Fray cuz they actually use a piano. Most other bands don't use pianos, just the usual guitars, bass, and drums. | 05-01-2007 23:23 twang_heart | 11 posts

This song is amazing. It has many meanings which can relate to almost anyone if you look deep enough.
I Love this song because of the meaning that it means to me.
I lost my dad when I was 7 and always felt I could have done something to prolong his life and Im still dealing with believing that it was beyond my control.
The line "Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness" I can also relate to this because I lost one of my best friends for really no reason at all someone lied to her about something I apparently said and now were not friends. Our friendship was really strong and I miss it.
So this song is diffently one of the most meaningful songs ive heard in a long time. | 10-01-2007 23:32 lavaOlamp | 7 posts

this is a really cool song not to make fun of it but my friend shane's best friend kelesy made up new lyrics to the chorus:
were did i go wrong i lost a friend
somewhere along in the bitterness
and i would of stayed up with you all night
if i would of known
how to save a life
we changed in to:
Were did I go wrong I lost a pie
somewher along in the bitterness
and I would of stayed up all night
If i would of known
How to eat a pie |
