Song lyrics
I’ve heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music do you?

It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled King composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you

She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah

Maybe I’ve been here before
I know this room, I’ve walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you

I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It’s a cold and it’s a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah

There was a time when you let me know
What’s real and going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?

And remember when I moved in you
The Holy Dark was moving too
And every breath we drew was hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah

Maybe there’s a God above
And all I ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you

And it’s not a cry you can hear at night
It’s not somebody who’s seen the light
It’s a cold and it’s a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah

Oh, it's so great <3 I've heard few other versions too, but i love this most. And that's because i love Rufus Wainwright's voice. There are not enought adjectives to describe it!

This song was also used in the 2004 movie titled SAINT RALPH (a surprisingly good movie) about a young high school boy who takes up running hoping that the same miracle that would make him win the Boston Marathon... would also be the miracle that would save his dying mom. (We rented it from Netflix not long ago)

The movements in this song were very effective. I especially liked:

And it’s not a cry you can hear at night
It’s not somebody who’s seen the light

> It’s a cold and it’s a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah

It's at that point, when a person who has been consumed with a dream, who has succeeded in surpassing everyone's expectations but their own, whose unyielding passion has brought them to that final test... and then it's over... & everything in your whole being is spent... emptied... exhausted... it's not a pain or sorrow that you feel, it's not a grand victory you celebrate... it is the naked soul that rises within you... and sings! ... hallelujah. Hallelujah.
H A L L E L U J A H . . . hallelujah.

& you'll just have to rent the movie to see if he got the miracles he expected!

(can you tell this is one of my many Favorite Movies?! Of course, I liked Shrek, also... & cried just about the same for BOTH movies!)

A few days ago, I suddenly had a waning and unknown desire to hear this song, this rendition, and this artist. A passed it off for a few days until I decided it was convenient enough. Now, listening to it for the past two days, it is no longer a song. It's neither melody nor music. It's an existing truth - the words in the back of my head that have been playing my whole life. Hearing it externally is a comfort and I can barely bring myself to turn the song; my heart aches. This, a wondrous tune, is heaven from which I cannot turn away.

Love this song.

Some people wanted the music sheets, or something? I don't know much about writing or playing music, but I found this page by accident and it looked like it might be of some use to anyone who wants to play this song.

It is such a beautiful song.

For anyone looking for the sheet music, it is available through musicnotes.com.

Here is the link to the song. http://www.musicnotes.com/sheetmusic/scorch.asp?ppn=SC0022977

Rufus Wainwright is one of the most talented musicians today. I have no idea why he isn't more popular than he is...

There's been a lot of misinformation so far... But rest assured, what I'm about to tell you is the truth.

Leonard Cohen, one of my favourite songwriters, wrote the song, he wrote 15 verses.

On his studio version, he only recorded 4, but he sings different ones live. Most people find his versions hard to enjoy because of his unique voice and arrangements.

When John Cale (formerly of the Velvet Underground and various other projects) saw him performing it live, he asked him for the lyrics. Cohen sent all 15 verses.

Cale selected 5 verses for his 1991 piano version... the first two were the same as Cohen's studio version's first 2. He did not write the 'new' verses... He chose them from the 15 Leonard Cohen sent him.

To the person who said they fell in love with this version as soon as they saw Shrek... Actually it's John Cale's version which appears in the movie, but Rufus Wainwright's appears on the soundtrack because of record label issues.

Since Cale's version, most people who have covered it, including Jeff Buckley (whose version is the most popular), have used the same verses as John Cale.

My favourite verse though, is the last one on Cohen's studio version... "And even though it all went wrong, I'll stand before the Lord of Song with nothign on my tongue but Hallelujah". Beautiful.

This is an amazing song no matter who sings it.

i'm sure most of you don't know this so i figure i might as well tell you.

the lyrics that say
"Your faith was strong but you needed proof,
you saw her bathing on the roof,
her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you"

is actually talking about a passage in the bible in the book of kings ( i can't remember if it's 1 or 2) and it's about david and bethsheiba. hence the david refrence in the song.

also, the lyrics that say
"She tied you to a kitchen chair,
she broke your throne,
she cut your hair,
and from your lips she drew the Hallelujah"

is talking about the story of samson and delilah, which is also from the bible, from the book of judges. and if you don't believe me, you can check it out yourself.

God I love this song... yeah I know he's not the one who wrote it, but he just sings it with such a beautiful voice...
And the lyrics speak for themselves, they sound so wonderful.
