Where are we?
What the hell
is going on?
The dust has only just
Begun to fall
Crop circles in the carpet
Sinking,
Feeling
Spin me round again
And rub
my eyes
This can't be
happening
When busy streets
a mess with people would stop to hold
their heads
heavy
Hide and Seek
Trains and sewing machines.
All those years
They were here first
Oily marks appear on walls
where pleasure moments hung before
The takeover
The sweeping insensitivity
of this
Still Life
Hide and Seek
Trains and sewing machines (Oh, you won't catch me around here)
Blood and tears (Hearts)
They were here first
Mmm, what you say?
Mm, that you only meant well?
Well, of course you did.
Mmm, what you say?
Mm, that it's all for the best?
Ah, off course it is.
Mmm, what you say?
Mm, that it’s just what we need?
And you decided this?
Mmm what you say?
Mm,
What Did She Say?
Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth
Mid-sweet talk
Newspaper word cut-outs (Paper word cut outs)
Speak no feeling
No, I dont believe you * i dont believe you
You don't care a bit,
You Don't Care A Bit
Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth (Hide and Seek)
Mid-sweet talk
Newspaper word cut-outs
Speak no feeling (Hide and Seek)
No, I dont believe you
You don't care a bit,
You Don't Care A Bit (you don't care a bit)
Oh, no (Hide and Seek)
You don't care a bit. (Hide and Seek)
Oh, no
You don't care a bit.
Oh, no
You don't care a bit
You don't care a bit
You Don't Care A Bit

okay, a couple of people have asked what this song is about.. the truth is, it is so unusual that i think you need to come to your own conclusions.. i don't think anyone will ever know what it quite means (besides the authors) but here is what i have sortof worked out.. may be completely wrong, but its an idea..
--------------------------------------------------------
i think that 'hide and seek' is about someone discovering and dealing with the fact that thier lover is leading a second life with them. 'hide and seek' signifies her quest to know the truth, and him hiding his other life on both accounts. "trains and sewing machines" may represent his child and wife, who were 'there first'.
'where are we? what the hell is going on? the dust has only just began to form crop circles in the carpet' can be translated into, 'how did we get like this? i don't understand, this is just the beginning there are worse days to come.' 'and rub my eyes. this can't be happening' she is in disbelief of what she has found out. 'oily marks appear on walls where pleasure moments hung before ' - all the pleasure that i had with you has turned into anger and saddness, because i know what you are doing and that this is a lie.
"ransom notes keep falling out your mouth' to me signifies him freeing her by ending the relationship but its too late as he already has her heart. she feels used and bitter, stating that he doesn't 'care a bit'.
the bridge 'mmm, what'd you say? mmm, that you only meant well, well of course you did.
mmm, what'd you say? mmm, that it's all for the best, of course it is. mmm, what'd you say? that it's just what we need - you decided this
mmm, what'd you say? mmm... what did she say?' means basically 'you keep telling me that its all for the best, but who are you thinking about, yourself ofourse. what did your wife have to say? what did i have to say?' etc etc..
--------------------------------------------------------
so yes that is pretty much how i perceived it.. you may all think its completely wrong and that's cool, feel free to write and ideas and thoughts you have in regard to this..
* i absolutely adore this song.. words cannot describe, but i just want to let you know that although i do love the OC tonnes, that shouldn't be the only reason that you love this song.. yeah it was a good ending etc etc, but this song means so much more than a teen soapie! (heh, harsh but true) i had an obsession with imogen heap before the oc and will continue long after, all of her stuff is so unique but amazing if its your style of music! so download some others and enjoy.. -xxx- * | 18-07-2005 05:04 Nicoletaylor07 | 3 posts

I love this song. It's about heartbreak, and how everything seems slow, unimpressionable, dreary etc when you are the one being dumped. Imogen expresses her frustration with the man who dumped her saying he "don't care a bit", and "it's for the best? Ah of course it is." The use of breaks between her vocals without instrumental accompaniment also symbolises the 'stop' her life has come to as she has lost direction. Very sad, very true, just the way it is sung makes it sad. BUT I LOVE IT | 20-07-2005 09:15 sephiroth206 | 35 posts

I hate you people.... you stupid OC FREAKS.... i hate people who listen to one song from a movie/tv show and think that they're pros at the thing! Do you even know who imogen heap is?
she's an awesome female artist and one half of the chillout outfit "frou frou".. i suggest you buy one of frou frou's albums or "speak for yourself", her solo's stuffs mostly pianos if u like that kinda stuff... I love indie music, but if u expose an indie artists on tv shows like the OC, they dont keep indie... they just turn to mainstream... which justs Sh*ts me. Cant you teenyboppers leave this discussion OC FREE and talk about the music PLEASE!!! | 27-07-2005 19:16 rico945 | 1 posts

i agree that this is not an OC forum but.... lots of people got i touch with this song threw the oc and thank god that i watched or else i would never knew about this song.
--------------------------------------
the oc serie is just full with this kind of music, music that just confront you with emotions, not only from the serie but for yourself.... the oc also got a website where they sell cd's with the soundtracks but not all the best songs are included. just download these songs and you will know what i'm talking about:
Jose González - crosses
Joseph Arthur - a smile that explode
Jet - Move on
Matt pond PA - champagne supernova
Rachel Yamagata - The reason why
solomon burke - Don't give up on me
Sufjan Stevens - to be alone with you
ryan Adams - Wonderwall
The perishers - Trouble sleeping
These are just some of the songs.... i made 4 cd's and i could listen to them for hours!!!
hide and seek is one of the best songs i've ever heard and i can't stop telling people about it.
keep listening and enjoying the power of music!!!
ps. does anybody know when the third season of the oc starts??

I'm really scared about this post because I'll get my head ripped off if I mention The O.C. or if I get the meaning of the song wrong or if I even try to talk about Imogen Heap. So all I'll say is this, I agree with almost everyone on this post that this song is beyond amazing and I've never loved a song the way I love this one. Okay, hope I didn't hit any nerves here! | 01-08-2005 21:58 Rach__123 | 2 posts

thats it.. im officially pissed off with the feedback on this song... it was like reading a review on the oc.. 'i dont like trey' all that rubbish.. u cant swear on this thing can ya? anyway.. so i joined this site so i could provide a legitimate review... its clear what this song is about.. first of all its a GIRL, telling the story of a boyfriend, that is breaking up with her.. 'what u say? that its all for the best?? thats its just what we need and u decided this? ... the oily marks on the walls left by their skin from wen they were together... now she doesnt know what is going on, and why theyve seperated.. she feels it cant be happening and now her world has been thrown into chaos.. the newspaper cutouts falling out of his mouth and ransom notes may represent that he is shirking the issue, and speaking in cliches and appears to have no feeling 'u dont care a bit'.. i think this song is a perfect depiction of the rejection of a failed relationship.. and has absolutely nothing to do with sumone dying or the oc, for that matter. | 06-08-2005 17:20 spectreman | 4 posts
| I've been vaguely familiar with Imogen Heap since the late 90's but became a committed fan just last year when a friend of mine asked me to listen to "Let Go" (Frou frou), which just happens to have appeared on a Movie soundtrack (Garden State, I believe?). So while I kinda have to agree with the people who are emphatically asking that the O.C. regferences be left out of the posts, I have to say that, I've asked around and found that not many people are familiar with Imogen. Imogen is, on her own, one of the world's most creative, talented and skilled singer/songwriter/producers.... EVER!!! So I have to appreciate that someone involved with such a show as the OC, which I've only managed to be able to sit through a grand total of fifteen minutes of (I'm an old guy. The show is lost on me...), had the presence and the guts to include "Hide and Seek" in the soundtrack of the show. It gives a GREAT, GREAT artist who would otherwise probably be lost on the world, some much needed exposure. I don't think that being an independant artist is what makes Imogen great, I think that Imogen being Imogen is what makes her great and I don't think that she will comitt to anything that will compromise her enough to make a difference, whatever the record companies promise. She's not new to the industry and she knows how it works as a result of hands on experience. EVERYBODY CHECK OUT HER MATERIAL so she'll always have the opportunity to feed our hunger for her material. She is one half of the group "Frou Frou", she had a solo album (rare and hard to find) in 1998 and her new Lp was just released in the UK. HOPEFULLY, it will be here soon!

| By the way. As I listen to this song, I find it a little difficult to distinguish if it's about a relationship or a terrorist attack which, I think, is part of the beauty of Imogen's writing. Her work is fairly consistently like this. Check out "FROU FROU: Details"!!!! | 08-08-2005 02:46 N11 | 1 posts
| i absolutely looove hide and seek...its so eery and sad. what other songs are good by imogen heap?? | 09-08-2005 23:33 spectreman | 4 posts
| WHat other songs are good will be totally a matter of opinion. I haven't been able to find a copy of her first solo release (Well... not for a price that I'm willing to pay for a CD ) but I will recommend the entire CD that she did with Guy Sigsworth as the duo, "Frou Frou". At first, I was crazy about the track "Let Go" but shortly thereafter, the entire CD grew on my in a major way. My favorite tracks from Frou Frou's CD, "Details" are "Let Go", "Psychobabble", "Shhh", "Maddening Shroud", and... basically all of them but seriously, "Listen" stood out for me also. As far as I know, there are only two current releases and, while they are as different as if two seperate artists had sung them, I like and suggest them both! Get everything you can with Imogen's name on it and ENJOY! | 11-08-2005 12:55 everyonesfriend | 1 posts

| I realize that this song was not supposed to be meant as a love song. But I love this song, and I thought some people might be interested to know that I am getting married next month and will be having this song as the song I walk down the aisle too. I think its beautiful and touching, and perfectly suits being played at our wedding. | 14-08-2005 03:01 uaioe | 2 posts
| Ok. Look. Since none of you have really listened to the lyrics or bothered trying to understand what the song is about, maybe you should really listen to the song first. You may be disappointed to know has nothing to do with the OC.
Sit down and just listen to the song. Listen hard with the lyrics in front of you. What would lead you to think this song is about love? That is such a copout; to default and say "well, I don't understand what she's singing, so it must be about love." There's nothing in there about a broken relationship or some lost love. It's not about love at all.
The first half of the song is about the fall of the Towers in New York and the confusion, bewilderment and heartbreak that resulted from it. Imogen even calls on images that we all saw on the news to bring the overall effect of the silence amidst the devastation into clearer focus. The second half of the song is a little more generalized, focusing on the leaders of the West (be it Bush or Blair) and holding them accountable for their decisions to send out the innocent to die for a senseless cause.
The more you listen to this song, the clearer its meaning becomes. Listen carefully to the lyrics, especially in the first half of the song, and you'll see there's way more to this song than just a girl singing about love, it's actually supposed to mean something. | 16-08-2005 08:29 JulieGH | 1 posts
| Thank god! I'd just about given up all faith in humanity until I got to uaioe's post just before I was about to set the record straight! YES, finally, the song "Hide and Seek" is about 9/11 and Bush's subsequent war in Iraq, NOT "love."
It has nothing to do with lost love or an ex-boyfriend! I can't imagine where so many people got that idea! Just listen to the words and the tone of this beautiful and MEANINGFUL song. it's all there:
the DUST has only just begun to fall (the twin towers...and more will come, it's just beginning)
BUSY STREETS......hold their heads heavy.....they were here first (the Iraqi people!)
THE TAKEOVER, the SWEEPING INSENSITIVITY, BLOOD and TEARS!!!!!!!
(and guys, come on!) OILY MARKS (oil!!!!!!!! that's what the war is really over!)
(Need I go on?)
All you people who thought it was about love, you may have heard this song but you weren't really listening. | 16-08-2005 08:41 badlydrawnroy | 685 posts
| Ok, thats just a bit dumb, this song isn't written about 9/11- i mean sure it can be interpreted in that way, as could a lot of songs, but this is about a relationship gone wrong.
"where are we, what the hell is going on" is talking about how she's confused cause this has taken her by surprise (this line you could argue alludes to 911) but "crop circles in the carpet" is about the rings that the legs of furniture make in carpets, so when you move the furniture (i.e. when it is removed because you are leaving and taking it with you) it leaves these rings which resemble crop circles.
Its about her lover leaving her, and going back to his wife and child (trains for the child, sewing machines to symbolise the wife) and how "all those years they were here first" implying she never knew about it until now.
I noticed one of you is from America, one from Canada, makes sense as to why you'd try to link this song to 9/11, but Imogen is British and based in London, and this song was written in 2005, it seems unlikely (albeit not impossible) that she would write about 9/11. | 16-08-2005 17:39 uaioe | 2 posts
| badlydrawnroy, I really like your interpretation of this song a lot. I know it must look really bad when someone looks at something and compares it to 9/11. It's becoming really tacky to do that, and for that I apologize, but I think this is a decent interpretation of the song.
I think my interpretation is not as hit-you-over-the-head as JulieGH's (sorry Julie). Lines like 'oily marks on walls' and 'they were here first' don't make me think of Iraqis or oil fields. It's mean to be more subtle and less literal than that; it recalls images of what New York was like in the aftermath. And phrases like 'when busy streets / amass with people / would stop to hold / their heads heavy', 'where pleasure moments hung before / The takeover / The sweeping insensitivity of this still life' and 'blood and tears' speak about more than just and ending relationship between two people.
I know that Imogen is British and that 9/11 was a while ago, but extreme poignancy of her lyrics and heavy use of silence in the song, to me, show that it's not supposed to be a love song.
And, ultimately, that's what I LOVE about this song. You can attach your interpretation to it and it'll still move you every time you hear it. I don't really care if Imogen herself tells me I'm wrong in my interpretation, because this song will never stop being special. That's what matters most. | 16-08-2005 21:38 badlydrawnroy | 685 posts
| I wasn't trying to attack you uaioe it's just I think its a bit unlikely she'd write this song SPECIFICALLY about 9/11, but yeah I think this song has a lot of different meanings and a lot of different situations it could apply for- it's definitely the beauty of this track.
