Song lyrics
Where are we?
What the hell
is going on?
The dust has only just
Begun to fall
Crop circles in the carpet
Sinking,
Feeling

Spin me round again
And rub
my eyes
This can't be
happening
When busy streets
a mess with people would stop to hold
their heads
heavy

Hide and Seek
Trains and sewing machines.
All those years
They were here first

Oily marks appear on walls
where pleasure moments hung before
The takeover
The sweeping insensitivity
of this
Still Life

Hide and Seek
Trains and sewing machines (Oh, you won't catch me around here)
Blood and tears (Hearts)
They were here first

Mmm, what you say?
Mm, that you only meant well?
Well, of course you did.
Mmm, what you say?
Mm, that it's all for the best?
Ah, off course it is.
Mmm, what you say?
Mm, that it’s just what we need?
And you decided this?
Mmm what you say?
Mm,
What Did She Say?

Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth
Mid-sweet talk
Newspaper word cut-outs (Paper word cut outs)
Speak no feeling
No, I dont believe you * i dont believe you
You don't care a bit,
You Don't Care A Bit

Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth (Hide and Seek)
Mid-sweet talk
Newspaper word cut-outs
Speak no feeling (Hide and Seek)
No, I dont believe you
You don't care a bit,
You Don't Care A Bit (you don't care a bit)

Oh, no (Hide and Seek)
You don't care a bit. (Hide and Seek)
Oh, no
You don't care a bit.
Oh, no
You don't care a bit
You don't care a bit
You Don't Care A Bit

You know what: I'm a big fan of the oc's, and yes, I did hear the song at the show for the first time..But i can't say that I think of trey getting shot everytime I hear this song! Sure, maybe the first time, but after that..The song speaks for itself. It's so unique, that i immediatly gets to you. After a while, the memory of oc fades, and you're left only with the song clinging to your mind..That's how strong it is.

I love it btw. But you already understood that, huh?

_amz_,

i can see the point u have and how the lyric's can be changed so it can make sense.i don't exactly agree with u but maybe if u told that to imogen heap, she might say that its close(u really paid attention to the song)
i think its a poem that she wrote early in her life, and made a song out of it.
either way its a beautiful song. .

bye,

I'VE READ HOW "HIDE AND SEEK"CAN BE RELATED TO THE WAR,9/11,AND LOVE.BUT PEOPLE UR NOT SEEING THE TRUTH .THE SONG COVERS THOSE AND MANY OTHER TOPICS.I'LL ALSO LIKE TO KNOW WHAT THE SONG MEANS BUT THE ONLY PERSON THAT KNOWS IS ITS WRITER,Imogen Heap,THATS WHY I STOPPED GUESSING WHAT THE SONG MEANS.MAYBE SOMEDAY SHE WOULD TELL US.

AND I DONT LIKE THE OC.ITS THE MOST BORING SHOW.I HEARD A RUMOR THAT IF THE OC DOESNT HAVE GOOD ENOUGH RATINGS.......THEY WILL CANCEL IT.I HOPE IT DOES(BUT ITS ACTORS AND ACTRESSES R REALLY TALENTED).BUT I STILL HOPE IT GETS OFF THE AIR.

I think that Imogen Heap is singing something sad ...... most of you just worry about the O.C. yes i do luv that show but dont you think this song has tears of its own. Think about how this song makes you feel. It makes me feel lost, sad, cold, heartless. I think she is playing hide and seek beacuse she is afriiad of one thing .... but I can't tell you that ..... thats for all of you to find out .... So just listen to the song with you eyes closed and your ears open .... and you will feel things.

this is for "rokker28" asking what the song 'Hide and Seek' means. i have always asked that question after each time i listen to it. not only is it the most beautiful song ive ever heard in my entire life but also the most complex. and then it hit me...forgive me for maybe sounding a bit typical but i had this sudden thought that it was about September 11th. im not sure of course but there is a possibility. let me know what you think.

Ok folks. Here's the deal. Those of you who said that she used no instruments weren't correct. Those who said she sang with a synth were almost correct. She did. What they did is a process called "Vocoding". Without being too technical I'll describe it, though it may require a brief review of physical science. Basically, you have two recorded sound waves. One of them is the sound of the synth, which has not only the melody of the song, but all the chords and moving lines (harmonies). The other "waveform" is that of Immi's voice, singing the melody. What happens is they take the shape of the synth's waveform and (remember, not too technical) make it fit inside the shape of Immi's voice's waveform. This can be done to varying degrees, so that the synth sounds like it's singing the words, or so that she sounds like she's singing in parts.

I know not all of you enjoyed reading that, but I'm sure some of you did. I love the song, and I agree that it has different meanings for different people. I didn't hear it on the OC, but if I had I'm sure I still would have liked it. I also recommend Clear the Area and the rest of the album.

I think this song is about a girl whos in love with a boy. Shes describing all the memories they had together and how great it was. But than you find out at the end of the song that he didn't care like she does this song I think is about heartbreak. This song is amazing, and sad.

Interesting take on the song. Yes, I think it's about a girl who met
someone and in the end it was just sort of an escapade not something
real. But I believe in fate and things do happen for reasons that we may
never fully understand. Maybe she was tryiing to hold onto a friendship
that made her feel complete. Maybe her entire "real" world was spinning
so fast that the her new found friendship gave her some kind of escape.
You shouldn't judge people on their actions. You should try to undertand
the deeper reason for them and be understanding. I'm sure that won't be
her only heartbreak in life. Each one will make her stronger. She is an
amazing woman, filled with many exceptional qualities. The guy should feel damm lucky she even gave him the time of day. I guess the train has stoped at its' final destination now and I'm getting the hell off.

This by far has to be lyrically, and instrumentaly the best song I have heard in a long time, by far. The way she uses her voice is unparralled.

The great thing about this song, is it gives you the opportunity to use this song for any situation in your life, at that moment.

I've seen responses that it's meaning is about a scorned lover, a child, the indians, 9-11.

If you actually visit Imogene's myspace page. The song is listed as being about an ex-lover. A relationship gone bad we'll say.

I have fell in love with this song. And listened to it constantly because I have never tired of it.

Honestly, I could care less for the O.C. I had originally heard this song when it was used for a picture slideshow someone had made on youtube, and then I instantly fell in love with it. Of course at first I couldn't make out what she was saying, but when I did, I literally listened to this song, like, 10 to 20 times back to back, walking around my house trying to figure out what she was talking about. There's not a day that I don't (or at least I try to) listen to this song.

It's really interesting to see how people interpret the words, and I can see how it ties in to some of them

Some people have been saying that this song is about 9/11. That did cross my mind one of the millions of times I was listening to it. i thought this because of the line that says busy streets would stop to hold their heads heavy. But the other lines lead me to believe that this is about a relationship thats ending. This is NOT "just" another love song or "just" a break-up song. It describes the loss of someone that was a part of her. Her whole world is collapsing and he doesn't even care. This can't be happing, what the hell is going on, crop circles in the carpet (the furniture that was once there) oily marks on walls where pleasure moments hung before (pleasure moments being pictures). this song is so amazing and it stirs emotions in me. i dont quite understand the chorus and I NEED to know what it means. I need to know. please tell me what you think.

This is my first post on the internet ever. Reflecting on this particular song seems like a good event to break the seal....I can see how the 9/11 references and many others seem to make very good sense of this lovely song but I will share my gut interpretation. I think in the end all of our interpretations carry the same emotions but different vehicles for those emotions.

I identify a lot with the beginning as she is attempting to shake off the painful truth that she is realizing in the same way someone tries to get drunk to forget things, spining, trying to change her immediate reality by physically rubbing her eyes, spining, having emotional mystical immagery. Trying to distract herself yet also looking for a way to comrehend it. Crop circles on the carpet.

Busy streets=unpersonal life, the people on the street stop, in her imagination, as they realize whats gone/going on. She superposes her own realization on the masses of people.

The author is depicting her paralizing sadness when she reflects on what this society is, where it emerged from and how it emerged(even though she is british i imagine this in the context of the US). The people didn't know it was turning so bad (reflecting on around the industrial revolution)...hide and seek, trains and sewing machines. Simple. But they were here first (native americans). And we destroyed that way of life (she identifies the destructive nature of the society simply and identifyably when she considers what happened with the native americans, the native americans innocence and helplessness is felt as her own). She feels angry and guilty. Then she talks to the people who caused all the fast pace destruction. They don't understand but she understands now. She's familiar with the ignorant mentality people have as they move this society forward, its always little sayings without greater perspective and context, "it is all for the best", "we need it". She treats the person little, like she is beyond that mentality and kind of patting them on the head, "oh, of course you did". In a way relieving a little guilt by seeing again how it happened. Always near-sited mentalities.

Then she is talking to present man, basically, you are all lies and a product of a people who has reached such extremes as to have no more human inside. We are now the polar opposite of the civilization we replaced. Its gotten so bad. What have we done? Where are we?

I hear this song on a SNL skit, and I really liked the bit they replayed throughout it. I got the whole song after watching that skit, and it's awesome.
