| Song lyrics |
I know a girl
She puts the color inside of my world
She's just like a maze
Where all of the walls all continually change
And I've done all I can
To stand on her steps with my heart in my hands
Now I'm starting to see
Maybe it's got nothing to do with me
Fathers be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers be good to your daughters too
Oh, you see that skin?
It's the same she's been standing in
Since the day she saw him walking away
Now she's left
Cleaning up the mess he made
Fathers be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers be good to your daughters too
Boys, you can break
You'll find out how much they can take
Boys will be strong
And boys soldier on
But boys would be gone without warmth from
A woman's good, good heart
On behalf of every man
Looking out for every girl
You are the god and the weight of her world
So fathers be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers be good to your daughters, too
So mothers be good to your daughters, too
So mothers be good to your daughters, too

my parents got divorced about three years ago and my dad has been an asshole to me, my mom and my sister ever since. when i first heard this song i actually cried and called my dad and told him to listen to it. i thank john to this day for writing this song because it speaks the words i could never have said to my dad, and now we're closer and finally starting to get along again ... all because of this song. john mayer is my god. | 09-12-2004 02:14 whi | 277 posts

He deserves the best he should get. I love him. He's a very talented singer. I heard this song and cried, because it made my mom change, it made her hug me for once, and say she loved me. I wish I could hug John Mayer, not for anything but a thank you. | 17-12-2004 21:27 erica81488 | 69 posts

Argh...thanks for bringing down the rate, Marc..
His voice just is the same, duh. Do you expect it to be different? His songs have that same...warm background. But that doesn't make his songs sound "alike".

John Mayer's music reminds me so much of when I was a kid and first love. Makes me reminesce (however you spell). Which is funny since I'm only 13. But if I didn't already have a religion, I'd worship him! His songs bring me hapiness.

| i love all john mayer's songs...but i liked "room for squares" better than this one...well i guess i need to listen to more of his songs from this album. I love the way john mayer expresses himself in his lyrics...plus he plays some WICKED guitar. yup. | 06-01-2005 04:01 RK_fan_91 | 1 posts

I'm a John Mayer fan, a fairly big one actually, but honestly.. you guys are over-rating this song. It's not some perfect work of magic. It's a good song, nothing entirely special.
To be honest, most of you guys sound more like little girls in love with John Mayer's music mainly because he's oh-so-dreamy, with the exception of the few who like the song because it has a personal value to them.
I highly doubt any of you go to his concerts/listen to his music for more than him being cute and having a radio hit or two. He's an awesome guitarist, with some decent songs.. Sometimes I think he'd do better if he were in a band and someone else sang. | 06-01-2005 05:38 B_0202 | 1,966 posts
| * offtopic : The above post^ kind of offended me...but, I'm not saying _iamHollywood did this on purpose. I am also a huge John Mayer fan; I have his CD's, but have never been to a concert because I live too far away from major cities to be able to attend one- does this make me less of a fan?; the song doesn't have any personal value to me (i.e. I don't have a story that relates), but I can appreciate the message and even psychological insight (I'm a psych major) of this song- does this mean I only like the song because I think he's 'dreamy'? I fell in love with his music before ever really seeing him...
Basically my point is I think you are over generalizing music fans. Plus, if you are such a big fan, wouldn't you want him to be as successful as possible, even if this means that some fans are going to like his songs more, based on his appearance (that's the reality of the music business). And, I really don't understand the rationale behind your comment about you wishing he was only a musician in a band...
Just because someone doesn't write a story about how much they relate to the song, doesn't mean they don't enjoy good music for a valid reason. People should be able to like this song, and express their opinion on it, for their own reasons, without getting chastised for it, whether these reasons be they like the lyrics, the way it sounds, or the way John looks...
Ok...my rant is over...

| I don't really like this song...but I'll give 'ol johnny credit cuz he uses such strange chords that make things interesting | 11-01-2005 21:40 joko66BB | 8 posts
| This is a good one. I am not a huge fan of Mayer, but the intricacies of this song are classic.
Simple message and very eloquently sung.
There are way to many families that suffer due to a broken home and the links in the chain daughters....mothers...etc. was great to acknowledge and sing about.

I just want to add that, though I was never a J Mayer fan before, this song is incredibly beautiful and moving.
What most impressed me, far more than the acoustic skills that I already knew Mayer had (sidenote: he was HILARIOUS on The Chapelle Show! )
This song is fantastic, not only because of its musical beauty (which is a totally subjective judgement) but because Mayer is celebrating a relationship and necessity that is totally, unjustly!, ignored by this crappy culture-- the Father/ Daughter (and, in a different way, /Son) relationship.
THANK YOU, Mr. Mayer, for recognizing the crucial role men c/should play in their daughters' life. L'Chaim! |
