| Song lyrics |
Send away for a priceless gift
One not subtle, one not on the list
Send away for a perfect world
One not simply so absurd
In these times of doing what you're told
Keep these feelings, no one knows
What ever happened to the young man's heart
Swallowed by pain as he slowly fell apart
And I'm staring down the barrell of a .45 (.45)
Swimming through the ashes of another life (another life)
No real reason to accept the way things have changed
Staring down the barrell of a .45
Send a message to the unborn child
Keep your eyes open for a while
In a box high upon a shelf
Left for you, no one else
There's a piece of a puzzle known as life
Wrapped in guilt, sealed up tight
What ever happened to the young man's heart
Swallowed by pain as he slowly fell apart
And I'm staring down the barrell of a .45 (.45)
Swimming through the ashes of another life (another life)
No real reason to accept the way things have changed
Staring down the barrell of a .45
Everyone's pointing their fingers
Always condemning me
Nobody knows what I believe
I believe
And I'm staring down the barrell of a .45 (.45)
Swimming through the ashes of another life (another life)
No real reason to accept the way things have changed
Staring down the barrell of a .45
And I'm staring down the barrell of a .45 (.45)
And I'm swimming through the ashes of another life (another life)
There is no real reason to accept the way things have changed
Staring down the barrell of a .45

| *sigh* This song has gone too mainstream No longer one of those gems that few know about
As for the meaning of the song, and old post of mine:
I got this off another site, and it's EXACTLY how it was depicted in my head...
"The writer (Brent or not!?!? I am confused on that one!) had a girlfriend/fiancé who got pregnant, and was told to have an abortion , reference; "In these times of doing what you're told." Perhaps it was because her lover was unworthy or did not live up to her parents standards. He is saying to his son/daughter "Send a message to the unborn child"
She will not tell him if she agrees with the abortion, because "[She] keep(s) these feelings, no one knows." He is heartbroken, confused, lost, and thinking the only resort left was staring down the barrel of a 45.
Yet, there is hope! "Keep your eyes open for a while," implies that he is telling his unborn child there is hope yet, and there is "No real reason to accept the way things have changed," and that life will get better.
I have not yet decided if the box on the shelf is in reference to the child or the man, but for the purpose of getting this down I'll go with the man. He has not figured out the "piece of a puzzle known as life," that is waiting "In a box high up on the shelf, left for [him], no one else." Maybe the box is for the child, but it has dual meaning in that the child does not understand why he is being killed, and neither does the man, as he is yet to solve the puzzle.
The guy feels guilty for ruining his lover's life, and more importantly that of his child when he states "Wrapped in guilt, sealed up tight." He is harbouring his guilt and anguish from the consequences of his actions. Blamed for everything, "Everyone's pointing their fingers, always condemning me." He feels grossly misunderstood; maybe no one is listening to his beliefs on abortion. He wants to keep the child but he is not being heard, "and nobody knows what I believe, I believe." Consumed by this oppression from within and the accusations and condemnation of the people around him, he does not know where to turn.
Anyway, I could be totally off, but that is how I see it, and I would like to read how others see it if anyone feels like contributing.
It doesn't matter how it was meant to be taken but as long as it has meaning to people (I have never been in a situation where I have felt that desperate, but I feel the lyrics in any event as they evoke some sort of deep human emotion that you do not realize you have until listening to poetry like 45) and has the ability to help or resolve issues of any sort, it is worth listening to. JDisturbed, that explanation you posted seems very good. I, on the other hand tend to overcomplicate and interpret lyrics wrong. It seems to me like when he says "wrapped in guilt" it's guilt for having sex and getting the girl pregnant?? Also, some people have said that the song is not about suicide; I find that hard to believe because it almost seems obvious. When I first heard this song I was suicidal. It's like, when you're at rock bottom "staring down the barrell of a 45" is contemplating suicide right? As people can tell, the song has the feeling of being at rock bottom or at least really depressed. Or is he going to kill his girlfriend? And is kind of apologizing to the unborn child since it is going to die when he kills the girlfriend...? At least that would explain saying "whatever happened to the young man's heart" At any rate, I felt like I understood part of it where he says "no real reason to accept the way things have changed" because that's how I felt, that I had to wake up from this friggin nightmare that was actually my life, but I could hardly accept that and almost killed myself rather than accept that...sorry for all the ranting!! BTW, JDisturbed, you shouldn't be so mad that more people get to know such a great song instead of just a select few. | 24-10-2004 02:33 Jesters22 | 2 posts

| well now that i've read people's opinions about wut the song is about i'm not really sure wut i think. it does seem suicidal because...well...you don't walk around with a gun pointed at your head everyday and usually when someone is staring down the barrel of a .45 they ain't cleaning it.
beautiful beautiful song though...you guys are awesome! | 15-01-2005 00:35 Annexx | 16 posts
