I'll sing it one last time for you
Then we really have to go
You've been the only thing that's right
In all I've done
And I can barely look at you
But every single time I do
I know we'll make it any where
Away from here
Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you can not hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear
Louder, Louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say
To think i might not see those eyes
Makes it so hard not to cry
And as we say our long goodbyes
I nearly do
Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you can not hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear
Louder, Louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say
Slower, slower
We don't have time for that
All I want's to find an easier way
To get out of our little heads
Have heart, my dear
We're bound to be afraid
Even if its just for a few days
Making up for all this mess
Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you can not hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

vocal The video begins with the boyfriend rolling a motorcycle into the dark of night. The rolling of bicycle before sunset means he's probably just crossed over to the other side - just rolled out of the tunnel. When the video and lyrics are viewed in conjuction, it appears the song is about a permanant breakup, death.
The boyfriend has already died. The girlfriend is near death (in the tunnel) and while he wants her to join him, he's urging her to go back and keep living because its the right thing to do. That explains the first few verses "I'll sing it one last time for you. Then we really have to go, you've been the only thing that's right in all I've done." And, the reference to a "long goodbye."
Though he didn't want to die, he wants her to go back and keep fighting (run) for her life. He tells her he know they will each make it from that juncture (the tunnel). Hence the verse, "light up, light up as if you have a choice, even if you cannot hear my voice, I'll right beside you there. Have heart, my dear, you're bound to be afraid even if it's for a few days, making up for all that's left." I think the reference to a few days means it will take her a few days to wake up out of her coma.
Perhaps his death was attributed to circumstance caused by him (car accident). The old man in the video is indicative of old age, a place he would like to have gotten to but sadly will never get to.
When the motorcycle crashes that means he's really gone. The crossing of fire in the sky going different directions followed by a shot of the headlights means he has gone his way and she has come back to life. He cries at this juncture but ends the song with an assurance that he's still here for her even though he's gone.

vocal I think this song is about drugs because "light up,light up, as if you had a chioce" they could be talking about how if you do drugs, it's like you don't have a choice, you have to "light up"(do the drugs)....just my opinion, anyone else think this too?
I agree with bridget7077 that the "light up" line seems to refer to drugs. I also agree with the many people who say the song is about two people who are in love but can't be together... because of the drugs, perhaps.

vocal Snow Patrol has done such a good job with their albums, theyre are all so well made, and it just shows in all the songs, that they have so much personal meaning to the band and so much time has been put into making them. But, especially in this song. I mean, it just sounds like the singer has actually been through this experience, in whatever he may be talking about in the song, its such a beautiful, hope filled song, but at the same time, everytime i listen to it, it makes me cry, ha ha. its beautiful.
but, when i first listened to this song, i thought it was about a death of a loved one. Or something to do with someone dying. Which made it even more sad. But, reading through your comments about break ups and the war, I'm thinking thats what its about, rather than my idea of a death.
I think Snow Patrol does that though, they leave you thinking, like they leave metaphors and analogies in their songs, especially in the new album, Eyes Open (which is GREAT btw, not as good as Final Straw, but its GOOD!) and they leave it open, so you can kind of, decide for yourself, so you can relate.
I Don't Know.
Just some thoughts.
[i]*You've been the only thing that's right,*
*In all I've done.*

vocal I think this song is absolutely amazing. I don't really think it's about one certain thing. I think it depends on how you can relate to the song yourself, and what it makes you think about.
It personally makes me think about my Grandma. I took care of her for the past 3 years when she had cancer.. I can hardly think about it without getting teary. Anyway, I think of this song of her singing to me.
It makes me cry every time. Sometimes I can't even listen to it.
But I know it's just.. stunning. I love it.

vocal goosebumps... love this song! the verses and the guitar remind me a bit of placebo, but the chorus is definitely snow patrol. this song (AND the albums AND the band) deserves so much more attention than they currently get. these lads are truly gifted. not many bands can write songs like this anymore...

vocal I have to agree with almost everyone and say this song is amazing. But I do have to say that we all can have out own ideas of what this song means. It may be a relationship to some people but when I just heard this song again for the first time in a few years it made me think of my best friend who I haven't seen for almost 5 years but I still talk to everyday.

vocal Sorry to disappoint those who believe it is about the war, or about a long distance relationship(or about drugs, where did that come from?). Most of snow patrol songs are about Gary(lead singer) breaking up with his girlfriend and realising how stupid he was except this song which is about his friend who fell down some stairs and was in a coma. "Light up" meaning he wanted him to come around but "as if you have a choice". "Might not see those eyes" obviously eyes are closed in a coma. "Say our long goodbyes" he's not dead but could be soon. "even if you cannot hear my voice, i'll be right beside you" you know the whole can people hear the outside world when in a coma. so there you go, I found it out from an interview with Gary Lightfoot, i think it was from Q magazine (UK)

vocal This is my second favourite song in the whole world (don;t ask me what my first is, i haven;t found it yet) and maybe i am just really sinister and morbid but i always imagine the dude is dying and he is trying to tell his girlfriend he will always be with her and 'Light up' is his way of telling her to carry on, giving her the light of his life, as she was the light of his....sorry i;m rather soppy , just next time you listen to it think of your bf/gf lying in the middle of the road with your arms around them and it;s raining...you will cry

vocal This song makes me wanna cry every single time I hear it.
And I always try to sing along to it, but when I hear these lines, I tear up.
Louder, Louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say
To think i might not see those eyes
Makes it so hard not to cry
And as we say our long goodbyes
