Song lyrics
Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people

Eleanor Rigby, picks up the rice
in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window, wearing the face
that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

Father McKenzie, writing the words
of a sermon that no one will hear
No one comes near
Look at him working, darning his socks
in the night when there's nobody there
What does he care

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people

Eleanor Rigby, died in the church
and was buried along with her name
Nobody came
Father McKenzie, wiping the dirt
from his hands as he walks from the grave
No one was saved

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

I dont think the lyrics are the best thing about this song. The complexity of the music and the fact it was so revolutionary at the time makes this song what it is.
I love how with every beatles song you can hear all the different styles of music, just merge into a single song, to create that unique and timeless sound.

This song is a masterpiece. My favourite beatles song.

This is really beautifull song... And like someone said, it does has a bit accusing and criticizing tone, because most of the people aren't lonely they have friends, family etc, but we don't actually care about the lonely people in the world.

michi - I believe that those lines "Waits at the window, wearing the face
that she keeps in a jar by the door" mean that Eleanor Rigby is a lonely person who dosen't know some people who would come to visit her and talk to her and she probably dosen't get to talk and see much people. That is why she waits at the window for someone to come and she "wears" the face that she keep in a jar by the door, this is a metaphor that explains us that because no one talks and visit Eleanor Rigby she just sit and wait to someone and she wears a face that she dosen't use because no one sees her so she "keep this face in a jar" near the door so she can use this face when somebody comes but no body comes. Well it is pretty hard to explain (especially when english is not my mother lang) but I hope you understood.

i think the meaning of the face in the jar by the door is more like.. she puts on a front when she sees people, which she doesnt which is why shes waiting, at home shes depressed, but she keeps a happy face waiting just in case someone would ever show up
