Song lyrics
(Bill Anderson/Jon Randall)
Brad Paisley & Alison Krauss

(Brad)
She put him out like the burnin' end of a midnight cigarette
She broke his heart, he spent his whole life tryin' to forget
We watched him drink his pain away a little at a time
But he never could get drunk enough to get her off his mind,
Until the night.

Chorus: (Both)
He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away her memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength he had to get up off his knees
We found him with his face down in the pillow
With a note that said I'll love her 'til I die
And when we buried him beneath the willow
The angels sang a whiskey lullaby.

La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la.

La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la.

(Alison)
The rumors flew but nobody knew how much she blamed herself
For years and years she tried to hide the whiskey on her breath
She finally drank her pain away a little at a time
But she never could get drunk enough to get him off her mind,
Until the night.

Chorus: (Both)
She put that bottle to her head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away his memory
Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength she had to get up off her knees
We found her with her face down in the pillow
Clinging to his picture for dear life
We laid her next to him beneath the willow
While the angels sang a whiskey lullaby.

La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la.

--- Instrumental ---

La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la.

--- Instrumental ---

La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la.

La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la...

He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger

What does that mean? Bottle & Trigger?? I'm confused.

since the song is about drinking, bottle is used symbolicly in place of "gun." so the trigger refers to a gun. He and she shot themselves in the head.

Ok, that is what we were thinking when my friend and I discussed it. Like... barrel and bottle... thanks

I got confused by that part too... I thought it was kinda... graphic sayin' that they shot themselves... didn't really seem to fit it right. I kinda saw the whole bottle/trigger thing as saying they drank themselves to death. Like drinking was symbolized as the gun and "pulling the trigger" was like alcohol abuse or something. I thought that fit it a lil better than them shooting themselves.

And lildarlin, I have the song... if you want I can send it to you through e-mail or something later. Just leave me a message if you still need it.

hey guys i love this song it is totally sentamental and beautiful the song sounds beautiful and the words really make u turn off the radio and think but i think that all of you guys that are confused by the words and stuff that you are reading into the sond too much i mean the point is that he loved her so much that no matter what he couldnt get her out of his mind and her memory haunted him so much and his heart hurt so much not being able to be with her that he killed himself to be released of her memory and the pain of not having her and then she felt guilty and remembered all the good times that they had had and so she killed herself out of guilt and it is really thought provoking about the lyrics and the subject of suicide itself so just think about that big picture and dont read into the exact words too much!!!!! ok and i agree with u all it is an amazing song! and it makes me cry every time i hear it because my best friend committed suicide and im pretty sure it is because his girlfriend...the love of his life...just died in a car accident so it really touches me good taste in music guys!!!!!!!!

[b][topic=]This is the most amazing and powerful songs I have ever heard. It reminds me just how powerful love is and how it can do amzing things to people. I know I never want to end up regreting my life like the woman did in this song or living off of someoenes memory liek the man did. Life adn Love are both so fragile and I think alot of people think about the great things they can do but not very many songs highlight all of the tragedy they can bring. This story is so realistic too, it just touched my heart so much, i cry everytime. This is definetly my favorite song, I LOVE IT!!!!!!!

That song is wonderful and sad. i come from Czech Republic and there is only one radio which has country songs. Every Friday there is Country Top 40 and there was Whiskey Lullaby. I wish I could hear more songs like this, even from another radios ;-)

This is a really good song. It's really sad, but it tells a good story. Brad and Allison's voices are both so beautiful in this song. Their voices complement eachothers so well, which makes this song even better!

what a totally steller song, i love it! its the sad ones that are the good ones. for some reason, happy songs about things that always go right make me feel hopeless and deceived, because its so obvious that things are never really that good for everyone, and to sing about things being that way just seems naive and hypocritical

yeah this is a sad song, i know it glorifies suicide but not many people expirience true love and when its gone u would rather kill urself than live with the pain. ive recently lost a my wife heather and i know how he feels. its like someone lit your heart on fire and this is the only way to put it out. it sounds bad but the pain is overwhelming

When I first heard about "Whiskey Lullaby," I thought that it wasn't worth listening to. I thought Alison Krauss is nothing but pure Bluegrass, and Brad is country. I never though that their voices would blend in such a unique way! It is a beautiful, but yet sad song. THAT is what makes it so great. I believe that this should go into the list of the greatest songs in Country Music History!!!!!!

I totally fell in love with this song. The first time I heard it was at work and I cried. I know what they felt. Love is a strong thing and when you lose it, like I did, it drives you out of your mind and death seems like the easiest way to forget about it.

Fortunately I haven't lost it to that point yet, but I think it's only because I believe that we will be together again.

This song is so beautiful and the lyrics are so emotional. Brad and Alison did a great job!!!

First off, I think suicide is Horrible, and I believe people suffer eternally for killing themselves. I am a Christian, and suicide is completely wrong. God loves everyone, and He does NOT want people to kill themselves. The song however is very sad, and I like it. God bless.
