To me it seems clear that by saying "Stuck on the end of this ball and chain And I'm on my way back down again" that he in a relationship or marriage that he can't leave but would desperately like to' which would also suggest why "There's no chance of release", and why he's "dead on the surface but screaming underneath". I think the reason he says "If i, if Id only waited Id not be stuck here in this hole" is because he has found another who is his true love that he wishes he would have just waited for. I think that this person returns his undying love, which is why he says "You can say what you mean But it wont change the sin. I'm sick of the secrets" because if he is a christian man, that would suggest that acting upon these feelings or expressing them, no matter how passionately they are felt, would be a sin. And in his unhappy relationship, he finds his true love which is why he says "Stood on the edge, tied to a noose You came along and you cut me loose You came along and you cut me loose You came along and you cut me loose." He's found the person he so hopelessly loves. And they have set him free from his loveless existence. Anyway, I'm no poet, but that's how this song speaks to me!!
