Song lyrics
Oh where, oh where can my baby be?
The Lord took her away from me.
She's gone to heaven, so I've got to be good,
So I can see my baby when I leave this world.

We were out on a date in my daddy's car,
we hadn't driven very far.
There in the road, straight ahead,
a car was stalled, the engine was dead.
I couldn't stop, so I swerved to the right.
I'll never forget, the sound that night--
the screamin tires, the bustin glass,
the painful scream that I-- heard last.

Oh where, oh where can my baby be?
The Lord took her away from me.
She's gone to heaven, so I've got to be good,
So I can see my baby when I leave this world.

When I woke up, the rain was pourin down.
There were people standin all around.
Somethin warm runnin through my eyes,
but somehow I found my baby that night.
I lifted her head, she looked at me and said,
Hold me darlin just a little while.
I held her close, I kissed her--our last kiss.
I found the love that i knew i would miss
well now she's gone, even though I hold her tight
I lost my love, my life - that night.

Oh where, oh where can my baby be?
The Lord took her away from me.
She's gone to heaven so I've got to be good,
So I can see my baby when I leave this world.

mmmm..........
uhohhhhhhhhhhhh............

Its a little weird how a sad song sounds a little cheery as in this song...either way I like this song a lot, the beat and everything.

I love this song. When i was in fourth grade, my best friend and I had a snow day and we listened to this song over and over untill her mom made us stop. It makes me cry every time that I hear it now. Pearl Jam's version isn't as good as the original, but it is still ok. does anyone know who sang it originally?

well..according to the last page, it was originally sung by the Cavaliers..
It is really an old song as it was based on a true story. I heard the song played on the radio today and the DJ got talkin' about the song's history -- which evidently not many know about.
It's about two 16-yr old sweethearts who got killed in a car accident one night in 1962 (?). The car fell off a cliff (famous for accidents, but I didn't catch the name) because of a truck that was running towards them. There was a gas station nearby and the attendants helped the two get out of the wrecked car. Obviously it was a very bad accident, as the gas attendant didn't even recognize it was his own daughter he was trying to save.

...so there,

Oh and do you know how Pearl Jam got to cover the song? Well, apparently he got his hands into an old vintage copy of the song which was being sold in a vintage store somewhere in Seattle and obviously liked it...ans the rest is history as we all know it..

really is good..not your typical Pearl Jam song but well done

It is a great song so sad makes you want to .
[offtopic] The original version was eithier sung by Dion and the Belmonts or Wilson frank and the cavaliers, lets sing it has both listed as previous singers, so not sure who sung it first out of those two, also have never heard of ethier of them,

The original song was recorded by Wayne Cochran & the C.C. Riders, but the version recorded by J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers in '64 was the one that actually caught on.

I love this version, it sounds like something that should be played at a high school dance back in the 50s or 60s. Though, I get the feeling that maybe that was the whole point.
