Sentenced to 5 years' imprisonment

 Bobigny's criminal court sentenced raï singer Cheb Mami to 5 years' imprisonment today (July 3), for having forced his former girlfriend to abort in Algier, in August 2005.
The fact was damning. With his manager Michel Levy, sentenced to 4 years' imprisonment, Cheb Mami put in place, in August 2005, a way to force the abortion of his girlfriend. In Algier, after he had made her drink orange juice, with medicine in it, he lay her on a bed. There, 2 women were charged to push her belly, scraping her vagina to remove the fetus in a barbaric condition. They yelled "Dirty bitch, you've mistaken !" "I've been trapped by my manager !" he said. "I didn't want this to be at home !"
During the trial, the singer didn't say any forgiven word, without looking at his former girlfriend. He didn't worry about her health, according to "Le Parisien". The day following the dreadful night, one of his friends showed him bloody skin, thinking it was from the aborted fetus. The couple's 3-year-old daughter is a miracle, she shouldn't have survived.
Today, the singer should have been sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment & a 150,000 € fine by Bobigny's criminal court, for "violence causing a stop during 8 days with grave circumstances : reunion, premeditation & facts committed on a vulnerable person, complicity of stealing, complicity of putting a bad substance & menace, not to lodge any complaint". The verdict has fallen : at 43, Cheb Mami has been sentenced to 5 years' imprisonment.
Born on July 11, 1966 in Saïda, Algeria, Mohamed Khelifati aka Cheb Mami started singing at 12. Coming to France in 1985, he launched raï, becoming an international star, like on his duet with Sting, "Desert Rose" (N°6).
