AboutChristina Aguilera (/ˌæɡɪˈlɛərə/, Spanish: [aɣiˈleɾa]; born Christina María Aguilera on December 18, 1980) is an American singer, songwriter, actress and television personality.

Aguilera's backstory is well-known. A native of Staten Island, the pre-teen began performing in local talent shows while growing up in Pennsylvania. In 1992, after appearing on "Star Search," she joined the cast of the Disney Channel's "The New Mickey Mouse Club" alongside fellow stars Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling.

In 1998, Aguilera's song Reflection for Disney's "Mulan" led to a record deal with RCA.

A year later, the release of her self-titled debut album arrived in Summer, 1999. It quickly hit #1 based on its first dance/pop single, Genie In A Bottle (which dominated the charts for five weeks) and other chart toppers including What A Girl Wants. It was a feat she would repeat the following year with Mi Reflejo, the smash Spanish-language version of her debut, followed by her 2000 hit holiday release, My Kind of Christmas.

In 2001, Aguilera joined forces with P!nk, Mýa and Lil' Kim on the smash Lady Marmalade single and video.

The eye-popping slice of (Lady Marmalade) ear candy kept her front and center in the international spotlight even as she began, slowly and steadily, to lay the groundwork for her upcoming second album.

Stripped, released in October 2002 sealed her status as an international superstar while transforming her previous squeaky-clean image into a fully sexualized woman with lots on her mind. Along with the superheated funk of the album's provocative debut single, Dirrty (feat. Redman) came such standout tracks as Beautiful, Can't Hold Us Down (feat. Lil' Kim) and Make Over.

Back To Basics, her third studio album as Aguilera described to be "a throwback to the 20s, 30s, and 40s-style jazz, blues, and feel-good soul music, but with a modern twist." (Back To Basics) was wildly inventive, whose throwback style creates a sound that's gritty and raw. The album's upbeat first single, Ain't No Other Man premiered on the MTV Movie Awards on June 8, 2006.
"This is a concept album that follows a bold vision," explains Aguilera. "The touchstones are Billie Holiday, Otis Redding, Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald - what I used to call my 'fun music' when I was a little girl."

Back to Basics was released August 15, 2006 and sold 4.5 million units worldwide, (with over 1.7 million sold in the US). She also began the Back to Basics Tour in Europe followed by a 41-date North American tour in early 2007. After this, she toured Asia and Australia, where it was supposed to end on August 3, however she canceled her dates in Melbourne and her final two in Auckland due to an illness. (Her extravagant arena tour included cabaret, three-ring circus and juke joint sets and 10 piece costumes designed by Roberto Cavalli). She released her concert DVD Back to Basics: Live and Down Under the following year. It was the most successful US tour by a female in 2009.

At the 49th Grammy Awards, Aguilera again won the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Ain't No Other Man".

In January 2007, Christina was named the 19th richest woman in entertainment by Forbes, with a net worth of US$60 million.

In 2008, to commemorate Aguilera's ten years in the music industry, RCA Records released, Keeps Gettin' Better: A Decade of Hits on November 11, 2008 exclusively at Target stores in the U.S. The greatest hits included her first three number one singles, and other songs released from her previous three albums. "Lady Marmalade" and several Spanish singles from Mi Reflejo were included in the worldwide releases. The album's only single, Keeps Gettin' Better, was premiered at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, and debuted and peaked #7 on the Billboard Hot 100, her highest debut on the chart.

In late March 2010, after nearly two years of not releasing any music, Not Myself Tonight premiered.
Aguilera's fourth English studio album, Bionic, was released on June 8, 2010. The album's only two singles, the title track and You Lost Me peaked #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Charts but were unsuccessful elsewhere.
The album's material consisted of many mainstream and pop records along with electronic and dance music. Its sales were underwhelming in the US compared to her previous releases selling 110,000 copies in its first week landing at #3. The album has sold 260,000 units in the US to date. Shortly after the album's release, further promotion ended and a scheduled summer tour for the album was cancelled due to "inadequate rehearsal time".

On November 15, 2010, Aguilera received a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

During that time, Aguilera got a starring role alongside Cher and recorded songs for Burlesque [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] [2010] - Burlesque [2010] (movie). Upon its release, the movie received mixed to average reviews. However Aguilera's vocals, dance performances and acting were praised as Kirk Honeycutt of The Hollywood Reporter called Burlesque "a refreshing throwback to movie musicals that celebrates its stars while indulging in sexy fun".

From 2011-16, Aguilera appeared as a judge on the US singing talent show, "The Voice".

On June 21, 2011, Aguilera was featured with Adam Levine, a fellow Voice judge and the frontman of Maroon 5 on the song Moves Like Jagger which became a commercial success.

In 2012, Aguilera released Lotus (to her as a meaning of "rebirth" due to her personal struggles at the time) which critics cited as "generic" and wasn't as innovative as her previous work. Two singles were released with Your Body charting at #34 on Billboard Hot 100 and Just A Fool (feat. Blake Shelton), her fellow "The Voice" judge peaked at #71 on Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In 2013, Aguilera featured with rapper Pitbull on the song Feel This Moment, which peaked at #8 on Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum by the RIAA. She later collaborated with A Great Big World on their ballad Say Something, which earned a six-time platinum certification from the RIAA and won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards.

After a six year hiatus, Christina released Liberation which she heavily incorporated R&B and hip hop on the album to represent her desire for freedom from what she described as the "churning hamster wheel" that was her time on "The Voice". Liberation debuted at #6 on the Billboard 200 chart, becoming Aguilera's seventh US top-ten album. The album's two singles - Accelerate (feat. Ty Dolla $ign and 2 Chainz), peaked at #1 on Billboard US Dance Club Songs and Fall In Line, a duet with Demi Lovato, peaked at #1 on Billboard US Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles.

As one of the most accomplished performers of the last decade, Christina Aguilera has cultivated a fan base that crosses generational, racial and gender lines and is best known for her vocal ability, music videos, and ever-changing image. She includes themes of dealing with public scrutiny, her painful childhood, and female empowerment in her music. She has also dedicated much of her time as a philanthropist for charities, human rights and world issues throughout her career.
