Colbie Caillat returns Aug. 25 with 'Breakthrough'

Colbie Caillat, who went from an unknown to platinum-plus star in two years, will release her second album, Aug. 25, Hitfix has exclusively learned.

Her sophomore set, "Breakthrough," features collaborations with John Mayer, Kara Dioguardi and top producers John Shanks and Rick Nowels.

We even got a sneak listen to one of the tracks, "Falling For You." The lilting mid-tempo ballad, co-written with Nowels, features an instantly catchy chorus and toe tapping melody. It also makes clear how far this Malibu girl has developed as a songwriter since her first hit, the sweet, laid-back "Bubbly."

"I can't wait to share all my new songs with everyone," Caillat tells Hitfix in a statement. "I've taken this time to look back at where I was and realized I've broken through a personal barricade, which is why I've named the album 'Breakthrough.' I came home in December after two solid years of touring and promotion and knew I had to find myself again. It requires a lot of discipline to open yourself up to new influences and break the chains around you creatively. I must say this process has been the greatest learning experience for me. It's so great to be working and writing in new ways, with old friends and new."

Caillat, whose subtle style recalls Jack Johnson, wrote more than 40 songs for the new album by setting up a "writing camp" in Hawaii and inviting such colleagues as Jason Reeves and Mikal Blue, the co-producer of her first album, "CoCo."

Caillat developed as a MySpace sensation, attracting a label bidding war after her songs started garnering unprecedented page views on myspace for an unsigned artist. She subsequently signed with Universal Republic. Her debut album, "Coco" bowed in the Top 5 of the Billboard 200 and stayed in the upper reaches of the chart for months as fans continued to discover her. "Bubbly" topped both the Triple A and Hot AC charts. Follow up single, "Realize" also went top 5. In between tours, Caillat also found time to duet with Taylor Swift for the country star's charttopping "Fearless" and with Grammy-nominee Jason Mraz on his song, "Lucky."
