Counting Crows - Biography

16-07-2006 04:44 | 0 reaction(s) | add reply
Formed in August of 1991 in San Fransico's Bay Area, Counting Crows gained a strong local following before signing with Geffen's DGC label to record their first album August and Everything After which landed in late 1993. Counting Crows didn't really take off nationally until they filled in for Van Morrison at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony in 1994. On the back of the one upbeat track on the entire album, Mr. Jones, August and Everything After became a national hit, reaching 4 on the Billboard 200 in '94.
The music of Counting Crows originates in the mind of lead vocalist and bandleader Adam Duritz, who writes the lyrics and basic chords for each song. Duritz has been quoted as saying that his lyrics are very personal, though they don't always represent actual events in his life. Though originating in the mind of Duritz, Couning Crows' songs are very much the creation of every member. In Duritz's words, "I really think of us as a group songwriting process, even though I write more of the basic chord patterns and the lyrics."
