Review: Cute Is What We Aim For, 'Rotation'

With all their emo-tinged pop-punk role contemporaries - from Fall Out Boy to Panic at the Disco - experimenting with broader pop sounds, Cute Is What We Aim For almost seems bold for sticking closely to their original sound on "Rotation" (Fueled by Ramen).
The Buffalo-based quartet has streamlined their pop-punk delivery system a bit for "Rotation," making their hooks even bigger and keeping everything else to a minimum. Singer Shaant Hacikyan does sound much more earnest on the infectious first single, "Practice Makes Perfect," which sounds like the appealing midpoint between Taking Back Sunday and the pre-"Iris" Goo Goo Dolls.
But Cute Is What We Aim For really hits its stride in the middle of "Rotation," with the potent one-two punch of the ambitious "Hollywood" - with lines like "The way we're living makes no sense, take me back to the age of innocence" over horn lines that hearken back to producer John Feldmann's own band Goldfinger - and the touching, stadium-ready anthem "Safe Ride."
"Safe Ride" is a prime example of the kind of pop-punk that could work for not just Hacikyan and his pals, but pretty much the whole genre. It's got roaring guitars and emotional lyrics, but it slows the tempo enough to hammer the melody home and slices away some of its previous lyrical excesses. Like much of "Rotation," it shows what happens when you aim for something a little higher than cute. |
