Cheers darlin'
Here's to you and your lover boy
Cheers darlin'
I got years to wait around for you
Cheers darlin'
I've got your wedding bells in my ear
Cheers darlin'
You give me three cigarettes
To smoke my tears away
And I die when you mention his name
And I lied, I should have kissed you
When we were running in the rains
What am I, darlin'?
A whisper in your ear?
A piece of your cake?
What am I, darlin?
The boy you can fear?
Or your biggest mistake?
Cheers darlin'
Here's to you and your lover man
Cheers darlin'
I just hang around and eat from a can
Cheers darlin'
I got a ribbon of green on my guitar
Cheers darlin'
I got a beauty queen
To sit not very far from here
I die when he comes around
To take you home
I'm too shy, I should have kissed you
When we were alone
What am I, darlin'?
A whisper in your ear?
A piece of your cake?
What am I, darlin?
The boy you can fear?
Or your biggest mistake?
What am I?
What am I, darlin'?
I got years to wait around for you

vocal I just bought the Damien Rice "O" c.d. today, and I love this song. The arrangment is amazing and so are his words. It is hard for me to listen to this song because I can relate to it all to well. Especially when it cresendos in the last round of the chorus. It is as if I can feel his pain and regret...and torment. I to feel the same thing everyday.

vocal I think this song is definitely one of his best, i love the story behind it..how he had to sit through his secret love's wedding...i'm sure the words "If anyone knows why these people should not be married..etc" must have been the hardest words for him to hear
i love the fact that he was drunk when he recorded it, it gives a real authentic feel to it.
this is one of a few songs i know of which the production actually detracts from it...the clinking glasses do nothing for me. but still, fabulous

vocal Regrets are our burden, we have them all. But the one aching the most is the knowledge of losing a special person without making an effort.
This is definately one of my favorite songs on the record. It sounds so painful and beautiful. I could do without the glasses clinking, perhaps, but the song is still amazing.
He really was drunk when he recorded it? And here I was, thinking it must have taken a lot out of him to get that drunken texture to his voice without overdoing it. Still, can't say I'm all that surprised.
The clinking glasses are great. And the way the guitar melts into the Chopinesque piano in the end... love it.
