Song lyrics
We passed upon the stair, we spoke of was and when
Although I wasn't there, he said I was his friend
Which came as some surprise I spoke into his eyes
I thought you died alone, a long long time ago

Oh no, not me
I never lost control
You're face to face
With The Man Who Sold The World

I laughed and shook his hand, and made my way back home
I searched for form and land, for years and years I roamed
I gazed a gazeless stare and all the millions here
We must have died alone, a long long time ago

Who knows? not me
We never lost control
You're face to face
With the Man who Sold the World

I love this song! I agree with whomever said that the lyrics are a bit creepy. It is a common belief among many that Bowie's songs are allusions towards drugs. However, this one is just great.

It's really for the best if you don't try and understand it. Most of his songs make no sense. But if its really killing you www.songmeanings.net may help to enlighten you.

I do not know if anyone on this board also likes the group INXS, but, if you watched the TV show ROCKSTAR INXS recently - where they were basically looking for a new lead singer to replace Michael Hutchence. A talanted singer named sang "The Man that Sold the World." I had never heard this song before - not from Nirvana or David Bowie. I just loved it. She sang it beautifully.
The TV show produced a record from one night of the performances. That song happens to be on it. It is called ROCKSTAR for whomever is interested or you can also check it out at the following website: http://rockstar.msn.com/.

Enjoy !
