i love this song, but whenever i play it my friends are always like "ah, its too slooow" or something.
but i loooove it. i mean, isn't it cool how they don't go into the whole "i need you so much closer" chorus for awhile?
and the lyrics.. mm so deep. i heart deathcab

I really enjoy listening to this song, but I have not clue what it's about. I've tried examining the lyrics but I can't seem to find the meaning behind the symbolism. please help!

This song is totally about two people who are in love. One lives in North America, and the other somewhere in Europe. They had to move apart for whatever reason, and he's describing what it felt like and what he needs now. I'm living it. This has to be it.

This is the song that made me first fall in love with deathcab. The music is so emotional, it makes me feel indescribable everytime i hear it. Def a perfect make out song! I think it means that this person has this emptiness inside of them that only this one other person can fill, and in order to be whole again, thier souls must become one....

[offtopic] if anyone wants to recommend their fav. songs- please write to me, i love hearing what other people listen to!!

I think this is a totally awesome song. this is how i see it: I don't really think it's about two people in love, and that there is a literal ocean between them. I think it's about one person still in love from perhaps a prev. relationship. It could be about having to be forced to move on in a relationship. It's so awesome how songs can make stories that are so diff. for each person who hears it.

"making islands where no island should go..." is like, when you're in a great relationship with someone and everything starts messing up, like constant raining of stupid arguments that shouldn't have been made, that kind of stuff. And when you listen to the song there's a constant rhythm that keeps getting louder and louder... i guess like footsteps. And as the music gets louder, it's like the speaker is getting farther from this person. The distance keeps growing between them. Then, what I take to be the point of the song "I need you so much closer" is so powerful because you've already experienced this somewhat long wait, just like them.
Maybe I'm being to mooshy and taking too much from the song, but how can I do that with DCFC? All the lyrics are so awesome. Basically, transatlantacism to me is an awesome song about two people who are growing apart, when they don't really want to.

Whoa, so I love this song so much, and even though I don't really get what it means, I don't really want to, I just want to listen to it and know that it's amazing.

i dont think this song means a literal distance between two people who are in love, i think it is about a rift growing that cant be stopped.

death cab rocks hard.

i think benny took a 3 and a half minute song and made it 100 times worse by draggin it on for 7.5 minutes. Don't get me wrong, i love death cab, but ya gotta know when you've got a good thing and leave it.
