I'm going to start off by saying that this is an amazing song with so much emotion. The lyrics are beautiful as well as the symbolism. The chords, melody, and almost everthing about this song is so simple, but together they form a masterpiece. All 5's from me.

But how can you say that the length of the song made it worse? It was that characteristic that made the song. The length gives the song time to build, ever so slowly, gaining a little more strength behind each repetition of words and musical phrases. It makes everything about it so much more passionate.

This is what sets it apart from other songs, making a great song even greater.

Five's all around!

See, the most beautiful part of the song in my opinion is the chorus at the very end. it makes me want to cry whenever I hear it.

Transatlanticism is very well becoming my favorite song. I just love the echoing percussion throughout the song and beautiful chords on the piano and the guitar chords as well. it all fits perfectly with well written lyrics. WEll done.

i agree that this song doesnt delve into literal matter. i think that its about some drifting away from someone else. thats why it says "i thought it less like a lake, and more like a moat"--a moat stops you from getting to the castle, just like this thing prevents him from getting to the person that is drifting away. also, the next line about silenced footsteps shows that something is ending between two people, and ending "forever more." and then "the distance is quite simply much too far for me to row. it seems farther than ever before" shows that one person is drifting away, and the distance is growing and it has reached the point where the writer just cant make it to the person anymore. and it is over, but they still need the person.

it is an amazing song.

So in love with this song!

I think the few people that explained the song had it right on. The Atlantic is a metaphor for the problems with the relationship. The sky opening up and raining down I think is like that conversation(or argument) you finally have when you both know it's over and you just say everything you have ever wanted to say and everything that is wrong.

The part about standing on a perforated sphere is like him standing there with all these questions and unknowns and the water filling the holes is everything that is being said answers his questions. Like people have already said, the islands where no islands should go is saying that this conversation (or the opening up of the sky) is creating these islands, barriers for the relationship, where there shouldn't be any.

While the conversation could have been something that would bring them closer (a lake), he feels more like it is keeping them apart (a moat). The silencing of his footsteps "forevermore" doesn't mean they are no longer together. He says that the rhythm of his footsteps crossing flat lands is what is silenced. This is because there is no flat lands any more which I take just to mean that the relationship is forever changed by this event. He instead tries to get to her (or her understanding) by rowing, but the distance, or problems, caused between them is worse than it has ever been.

The ending chorus of "I need you so much closer" and the "so come on" makes me assume that the relationship isn't over, just changed and in need of help, which he is obviously willing to do.

Ultimately, I think the song is about the time in a relationship when problems have been building up and, for lack of a better phrase, the shit hits the fan and the two then have to figure out what to do (which in this instance, he is saying that he loves her and wants to work on things).
