Depeche Mode, Sounds of the Universe Review

For at least a minute – the overture to "In Chains", consisting of a long electronic bagpipe drone – you almost believe that Sounds of the Universe is Depeche Mode's risk-taking, populism-be-damned record.
Before long, the presence of producer Ben Hillier (Doves/Elbow), the go-to guy for commercial alt-rock, makes itself known, and SOTU settles into the same basic formula – essentially, blues scales played on electronic instruments – the band have been using since Songs of Faith and Devotion (1993), if not earlier.
Brooding, (pierced) navel-gazing, gothic with a medium "g", there's nothing that really belts along or slaps you awake, no "Question of Time" or "Personal Jesus".
Depeche Mode's 12th studio album is technically impressive and, frankly, a bit of a drag. At no point will you say, "Wow, Depeche Mode have really lost it." At no point will you say, "Wow, Depeche Mode have really got it back." Hold the front page: the latest DM album is a non-stunning continuation of form. |
